I was really pleasantly surprised that David Walliams achieved to write such a brilliant children’s books, I’ve always been a fan of his television comedy and the humour and pace of the book doesn’t disappoint. His style is very Dahl-esq which is helped by Quentin Blake’s lovely illustrations. Based on David Walliams's touching, twisted and hilarious tale of Mr Stink, a homeless man who is befriended by a local girl, Chloe. Chloe sees Mr Stink every day but she has never spoken to him, which isn't surprising because he is a tramp and he stinks. Quentin Blake was born in 1932 and read English at Cambridge, before attending Chelsea Art College. He has won many major prizes for illustration, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (1980) and the Red House Children's Book Award (1981) for Mister Magnolia. He is also the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration and in 1990 was voted 'The Illustrator's Illustrator' by Observer Magazine. A tireless promoter of children's literature – and a long-time collaborator with roald Dahl – Quentin Blake was awarded the OBE in 1988 and in 2005 he was awarded a CBE for services to Children's Literature. In the most recent New Year’s Honours list he has been knighted.

Ben hates visiting his Granny every Friday night while his parents go to ballroom dancing. Then he discovers Granny isn't quite what she seems, and life takes a dramatic turn for the better. Hi! Do you like showering? I do like showering they are nice, warm and relaxing. But if you don’t shower you stink. After that, people will call you to stink man. Then you get sad because people call you stink man. But if you shower none of those will happen. That’s why I shower. You shower then come out only waste 10 minutes or less if you are in a hurry. If you are hurrying to work you don’t want to stink. The point is when you shower it washes your germs and dirty stuff. You get fresh after that. We also had lots of fun dissecting some of the sentences when focusing on punctuation and grammatical features. The humor and relevance in Walliams' language made grammar just that much "less boring" . The story follows the journey of 12 year old Chloe, who at school is being bullied and has no friends. Chloe’s home life isn’t much happier either. Chloe has an annoying younger sister, Annabelle who is very popular, especially with their mother. Chloe also feels neglected by her mother and feels like her mother doesn't love her. (But this was solved in the end. Her mother indeed loves her very much.)Thank you,” he said. “Unimaginable kindness, but I can’t take it, sorry.” Chloe was confused. “Why ever not?” she asked. “You are but a child. Five pounds? It’s too, too generous.” “I just thought—” “It’s really kind of you, but I’m afraid I can’t accept. Tell me, how old are you, young lady? Ten?” “TWELVE!” said Chloe loudly. She was a little short for her age, but liked to think she was grown-up in lots of other ways. “I’m twelve. Thirteen on January the ninth!” “Sorry, you’re twelve. Nearly thirteen. Go and buy yourself one of those new musical stereo discs. Don’t you worry about an old vagabond like me.” He smiled. There was a real twinkle in his eye when he smiled. “If it’s not too rude,” said Chloe, “can I ask you a question?” “Yes, of course you can.” “Well, I would love to know: Why do you live on a bench and not in a house like me?” Mr. Stink shuffled slightly and looked anxious. “It’s a long story, my dear,” he said. “Maybe I will tell you another day.” Chloe was disappointed. She wasn’t sure there would be another day. If her mother found out that she was even talking to this man, let alone offering him money, she would go stark raving mad. “Well, sorry for bothering you,” said Chloe. “Have a lovely day.” As the The book was a recommendation from my 11 year old step son, who said that he thought the only books worth reading were written by David Walliams and I couldn’t argue with praise like that! I recommend this book for 7+ because it's very adventurous. I would also recommend all David Waliams books mainly gangsta granny! I think what makes the book quite special though, is that there are some quite serious morality issues within the book such as, prejudice and bullying. However they’re all written in such a way that children can easily understand and hopefully learn from. The best bits: This was a great read-aloud class book. The children laughed heartily at David Walliams' wordsmithery, and the vivid characters peppered throughout this tale.

It wasn’t Mr Stink’s fault that he stank. He was a tramp, after all. He didn’t have a home and so he never had the opportunity to have a proper wash like you and me. After a while the smell just got worse and worse… Knopf includes George's Marvelous Medicine and Fantastic Mr. Fox in its roster of handsomely redesigned hardcover Roald Dahl reissues. Chloe Crumb

I think Mr Stink is a very funny book explaining how tramps feel out on the road today and how they would feel if they were given a bit of love. Mother had given up running a beauty salon to stand for Parliament, and had no doubt in her mind that one day she would be Prime Minister.

This is the opening line of Mr Stink by David Walliams and as it made me laugh quite a lot even from that, so I knew I’d enjoy the rest. Being the great book pusher that I am, I have slowly and meticulously made all three of my kids book junkies, feeding them the drugs I thought would best insure their addictions. The twins have long been lost to the books, off in their own worlds, chasing their highs in shabby little used book dens, occasionally scrounging together enough for a purer hit from a flashy dealer, but not beneath pulling used books out of dubious bins to get their fix.
