but if you need more convincing, here are some thoughts from someone who is not an industry superstar and hasn’t gotten much sleep lately.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris | Waterstones

I adored my reading experience with this. I don’t read enough graphic novels because when I do, I more often than not love every second of doing so. This one was particularly stunning Peppered in between all that are Karen's notebook drawings of all kinds of things-her neighborhood, her brother and mom, and the covers of pulp magazines. She also likes to draw her version of popular paintings which her brother takes her to see at the local museums. All of her drawings are on lined notebook paper and all I can say about them is that they are stunning. All in pen, but not all in color-each and every drawing is so detailed you can stare at them for a long while and continue to find new things. There’s something comforting and empowering about becoming a monster. Losing your humanity and all the pain that comes with it when changing into something fierce and strange enough to scare away everything that once terrified us. In the world of Emil Ferris, to be a monster is to be something beautiful in spite of everything that has scarred and broken us.

Missy’s mother finds out about this conversation and the girls’ (innocent) nocturnal activities. She promptly forbids Missy from seeing Karen again outside school. Missy’s mother calls Karen’s, yelling “I really should not be surprised as people of your class never protect their kids from bad influences.” As the story opens, Karen Reyes’ neighbor, a troubled and beautiful Polish woman named Anka, has suddenly died. That's Anka's beautiful face on the cover of Book One, frightened, world-weary, and full of secretsthat perhaps can be unfolded by looking deeply into the her left eye that stares out at us (there's that eye/seeing theme again). By her own hand, or so they say. Karen, who has a rich interior landscape, sees reasons to question the suicide call and begins to investigate. Karen is a fan of monsters – especially the Universal Studios kind: the Wolf Man, Dracula, and Frankenstein.

My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Vol. 1 by Emil Ferris | Goodreads

Emil Ferris’ “ My Favorite Thing is Monsters ” was published in 2017 for Fantagraphics and takes place in 1968 Chicago, following young Karen Reyes, a girl who feels completely out of place in the world and finds solace in the idea of B-movie and horror magazine monsters. Karen imagines herself to be a werewolf, embracing the fantasies of horror when unable to come to grips with the darkness of the world around her, which is only intensified by the mysterious violent death of her upstairs neighbor Anka, her spiraling troubled brother Deeze, and her mother’s cancer diagnosis. Slowly, Karen works to unravel the mystery of Anka’s death while learning about her tragic life, coming face to face with the darkest aspects of the world and trying to transcend the true horrors in life through art.Macdonald, Heidi (August 17, 2017). My Favorite Thing Is Monsters: Art, Mystery, and Identity My Favorite Thing Is Monsters: Art, Mystery, and Identity

And last but not least Karen, the werewolf detective girl, one of the great characters of all comics history! Sava, Oliver; Rosberg, Caitlin; Hennum, Shea (December 5, 2017).
