Among weird stories now in circulation in island regarding Miss Fonario are mysterious remarks about blue lights having been seen near the body, and of a cloaked man. IN CONCLUSION: On going over a lot of this my gut feeling is that maybe Netta built up demons in her own mind. She had spent several weeks confined almost exclusively to her own company, spending her days in long, solitary walks, with only her own thoughts to occupy her. Now this of course can be a good thing. It would certainly be a boon to many creative people, and indeed Netta spent a lot of her time crouched over her typewriter, but very little remains of all her hard work. Terminal burrowing and paradoxical undressing are well-known effects/symptoms of severe hypothermia.

It says the doctor examining her couldn't tell how she died but isn't that a job for the police or a coroner? I think the cross cut into the turf was part of a ritual she was performing when her mystery assailant discovered her. Others believe that Netta may have been pursued by somebody she had known in London, and there were rumours of her being seen in the company of a mysterious cloaked figure, shortly before her death. Could she have been having an affair? Either in London, or even on the island, it would certainly have complicated things. The next few weeks were spent by Netta seemingly aimlessly wandering around the island, usually returning by nightfall. There must have been some resentment towards her from some of the islanders. She was an independent woman for a start, a southerner travelling alone on a Scottish island. And she was into occult practices...The coroner’s report on her death could not confirm the time of her death, only that it had happened sometime between the 17th and 19th of November. He concluded his report by stating that exposure to the weather had killed her as there was no obvious evidence of foul play. She is buried in a simple grave on the island Netta became interested in the island of Iona after reading a story by her favorite author, William Sharp, which described the area around Loch Staonaig as one where the fairies roam free. Sharp was a Scottish writer, of poetry and literary biography in particular, who from 1893 wrote also as Fiona Macleod, a pseudonym kept almost secret during his lifetime. I would love to hear any opinions/theories you might have! Any interesting sources or new info would also be appreciated. Netta’s death is both a medical and paranormal anomaly. Over the years, many people have found themselves questioning the medical examiner.

The newly commissioned script, using exciting imaging techniques to create a stunning visual landscape, marks the first collaboration between two Highland-based theatre-makers, the long-established Mull Theatre and one of Scotland’s most exciting new creative companies, Wildbird. These companies are brought together and the production funded by North by North-East, the Northern Scottish Touring Fund, and the tour within Argyll and Shetland is funded by Scotland’s Islands 2011. According to her death certificate, she died between 10.00pm on 17th and 1.30pm on 19th November 1929, of “exposure to the elements” or “heart failure”. She is buried in a simple grave on the island, which – according to Laura from faeryfolklorist, who took the photo I found on Strange History [linked above] – looks like this:

She seems to have resigned herself to this though. In fact, after a short spell in her room, she emerged and told Mrs MacRae that she had changed her mind, and that she would be staying indefinitely on the island. Netta’s sudden change of mood can seem baffling at first. I sometimes wonder if she had simply taken something as a “sign” that she was meant to stay on Iona. Someone like Netta would find symbolism in just about anything, and her belief in fate/destiny/karma would have been acutely strong. Hence her air of fatalism at this moment. Upon Thomas Pratt Ling’s death in 1909, his will (which was also reported here, here and no doubt in many other places) left money to his granddaughter Netta but with stringent conditions: Mairi Philips is excellent as melancholic Ruth and the two women convey well the ambivalent sisterliness and mutual paranoia of their friendship. Greg Powrie plays John with a certain stiffness that fits the period, and convincingly unravels as a doctor who cannot love, cures rather than heals and has his own guilty secret. Some skeptics believe that Netta’s death wasn’t related to spirits and can be explained medically. Medical experts have theorized that it’s very possible that Netta had ketoacidosis, a sometimes deadly condition in which there is a massive build-up of acid in your bloodstream.

Marie Norah Emily Edith Fornario, known as “Netta”, was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1897, the daughter of Norah Edith Ling and Guiseppe Nicola Raimundo Fornario, an English mother and Italian doctor father. After her mother died in 1898, she was placed in the care of well-to-do tea dealer Thomas Pratt Ling, her maternal grandfather, and lived with him and his family at Leigham Holme, Leigham Court Road, Streatham. Prior to that, she lived in Italy. She departed for Iona in either August or September 1929 taking with her a large amount of luggage, which apparently included furniture enough for a small house. Upon arrival she took up lodgings with a Mrs MacRae in Traymore. Jimi Hendrix may have written his song 'Wind Cries Mary' for one of his girlfriends named Kathy Mary, but there is startling comparison to the death of Netta Fornario within this song.
