About this deal

For a regular Joe or Jane like me, zoos are pretty much the only place we can see exotic animals live and up close. However morally questionable they are (the animals are held in captivity after all), they are also a valuable asset in animal research in preservation. Here’s where the fun begins. Each pen can only hold one type of animal, so there’s a strong element of set collection involved. Moreover, if you have a male and a female in the same pen, you get one free offspring. There’s the breeding part. 🙂 While the appeal (how attractive it is) of your zoo directly influences your earnings and victory points, the bulk of the latter will be earned by doing precious conservation projects. Your mission is not just to manage your zoo to make the most money, but to help preserve and thrive endangered species. Pets demand different food and items, they can grow and gain value, while the Lords also have their peculiarities and demands, which you will try to fulfill one way or the other. The third game in the Azul series keeps the tile-selection mechanic of Azul and Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, but has an entirely new placement mechanic, as players try to fill out the seven stars on their individual boards, but have to discard varying quantities of tiles to place on each open space. The tile colors all score differently, and you get more points for placing tiles where they’re adjacent to ones you’ve already placed. One color serves as a wild tile in each round as well, making it easier to get things done than in the previous two games. It plays longer given how much more real estate you’re trying to cover, and neither sequel has quite lived up to the original, but it’s still a good game to grab if you enjoy the core Azul mechanics as much as we do.

New York Zoo | Play Board Games

But the excellent craftsmanship doesn’t end with the components. A game is more than the sum of its constituent parts. I’ve experienced many games that look fantastic that are fantastically awful to play and I’m glad that New York Zoo isn’t one of them. And, let’s be honest, it’s Uwe Rosenberg. With the exception of a single dud (cough Hengist! cough), he always delivers. I first became aware of Uwe Rosenburg’s New York Zoo in an online video highlighting the top upcoming releases to watch out for. Uwe’s design, polyominoes and the most adorable animeeples...Sign. Me. Up. Take an enclosure piece, from the top of that spaces pile, and place it into your zoo. Enclosures can be placed anywhere on your board as long as the piece doesn’t overlap another or hang off the end of your play area. Once placed they cannot be moved. There is a further consideration. You can only play an enclosure onto your board if you can put an animal into it, so you will need one in 1 of your houses. Or you can move an animal from another enclosure, as long as you don’t empty that enclosure.Life in the big city has its merits: you’re surrounded by interesting people, there’s always something to do, and everything you could ever want or need is within just a few miles of your home. Well, almost everything. All of that industrialization and build-up comes at a cost. The rolling fields of grass and trees have given way to towering skyscrapers and housing developments. Sometimes in the midst of all of that concrete and steel you want to get in touch with nature again, to see and experience the world’s natural beauty, to step outside of the day-to-day experience. Sometimes you need a trip to the zoo. Overview Everyone loves to visit a zoo. But how about managing it on your home table? Find out which are currently the 5 best zoo board games on the market in 2023. Introduction to 5 Best Zoo Board Games in 2023 I do wish sometimes there were some point-scoring objectives, to deepen the strategic elements. I’d love to have certain restrictions on where attractions could be placed for scoring points, for example. Or trying to end your game with an enclosure full of Meerkats. I suppose this is always something you could house rule if you were trying to make the game more challenging for yourself. Read more… As soon as the tile is placed onto your board, you MUST move at least one animal into the Enclosure. This animal can come from one of your houses or even one of your other Enclosure tiles (as long as moving that animal does not cause the tile it is moving from to become empty). This, of course, means that you cannot add an Enclosure tile to your board if there are no animals that you can legally add to it. A maximum of 2 animals can be added to a newly placed Enclosure, but they must come from different places. This player has elected to move flamingos from existing flamingo Enclosures onto the newly placed tile. This game has great table presence, with colourful tiles and animal pieces combining for sensory delight. When a player gains animal meeples they can be placed into an enclosure of matching animal type or into an empty animal house. Making this a little more complicated, whenever a player adds an animal in this way to an enclosure they can also move a matching animal from a house into the same enclosure. This can be slightly forgettable in your first game, so players may have to keep reminding each other. An Ode to the Horniest Sitcom Parents, the Belchers and the Wilkersons By Clare Martin April 11, 2023 | 10:40am The gameplay is straight forward - either puzzle a new enclosure tile into your zoo area or gain new animals to populate. The first player to cover all the construction spaces on their zoo board with Enclosure Tiles and Attractions wins the game. You can only breed in up to 2 enclosures within your zoo at a time and breeding happens simultaneously for all players. On successful breeding, you can also add a further animal from one of the houses, if you have one, to that enclosure. Uwe Rosenberg is often a certain type of gamer’s favourite designer. Best known for Agricola (or Feast for Odin) and maybe most loved for Le Havre, the designer, not to put a too fine point on it, has form. So when we finally got our hands on a copy of New York Zoo, we arrived with high expectations.
