About this deal

Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced reader's copy of this book. I was not compensated for the review, all opinions are mine. Loved the book.

But most striking, and something I only fully realised at this novel’s conclusion, is that with each and every characterisation (even those of the least admirable) Fields achieves an uncommon level of emotional nuance and authenticity. I just finished reading One for Sorrow and loved it, but naturally didn’t like the cliffhanger ending. Please tell me there will be another Ava and Luc book. When will it be coming out? I’ve read the rest of them and really loved them and appreciated the writing. Reply With so many lives at stake, it seems an impossible task - but there's no option of failure when Bart and so many others will soon be dead.... It follows a police investigation into a bombing campaign that appears to be targeting first responders as well as individual victims. Being so well written and engaging, the book drew me right into the action - and there's plenty of it. I did gasp out loud several times at the turns the plot took. With twists and turns you’ll never see coming, prepare to be gripped by this devastatingly good thriller. Perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and MJ Arlidge .I appreciated that I could read this as a standalone but it was clear that this fit in with previous books and a set of well developed characters. I appreciate an author who can write in a way that satisfies new to the series readers and also please fans of the series. In their jobs, DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach deal with death every day. But when it becomes clear that every bomb is a trap designed to kill them too, the possibility of facing it themselves starts to feel all too real. I love great storytelling in a mystery/procedural, mysteries can be strong examples of quality writing and character developing and this is a nice example of what I look for in a strong, "I will recommend this", mystery. I love the DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach’s books so was thrilled to receive the latest instalment, and thrilled I was wow what a book, it had me gripped from the start and reading late into the night. There are lots of twists and turns that keep you totally engaged with a couple gasp

Book 7 (!) and I’m utterly hooked. During this series, Helen Fields has crafted not just some amazing plots but some really loveable characters that I for one, look forward to reading about in each book. Technically, Ava and Luc are two characters that you shouldn’t adore. They’re just too perfect! Even their flaws make them endearing. But the way in which Helen writes them makes them inexplicably engaging. I had a massive ‘whoop whoop’ moment on the arrival of Connie Woolwine!

This is book 7 of the series and the first I have read. I was pulled in immediately as the first scene is filled with action. The writing was great, not too much or too little with descriptions. The pace was fast and easy to keep up with. I enjoyed Ava and Luc as the main characters. I will be reading the previous books although I am spoiled a little bit with a character's future. I recommend this book, for sure.On the other hand, there is a kind of totally gone wrong love story about a young woman named Quinn and her boyfriend who, instead of accepting the breakup, turns into a freaking stalker. It is obvious that this is the missing link to the bombings, yet, you need to see the whole picture of Quinn’s story to understand the motive behind it all. But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows? A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar? Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly im possible task.... DI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have no motive and no leads - until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim. The deeper she digs into the island’s secrets, the closer danger creeps and the more urgent her quest to find the killer grows. Because what if Adriana is not the last girl to die? Dear Ms Fields, please don’t leave us in limbo too long and those characters we know and love, you know, can we have a happy outcome for them?In addition to her main characters, Field has a great cast of secondary characters, and it is always nice to catch up with them. Edinburgh also functions as both setting and character. After another young woman is found butchered, Luc and Ava realise the babydoll killer is playi ng a horrifying game. And it's only a matter of time before he strikes again. Can they stop another victim from being silenced forever Lottie is on the jury, trying to decide her fate. She embarks on an illicit affair with a stranger, and her husband can never find out. This book started with a bang and just kept rolling, definitely a “just one more chapter” kind of story. With every tip off they are walking towards danger. The body count is growing and they have no idea who the killer is.
