About this deal

After the exam, you may need to wait until the technologist determines if more images are needed. Sometimes, the technologist takes more images to clarify or better visualize certain areas or structures. The need for more images does not necessarily mean there was a problem with the exam or that something is abnormal. It should not cause you concern. PET scans are usually carried out on an outpatient basis. This means you won't need to stay in hospital overnight.

You will receive specific instructions based on the type of your PET scan. Diabetic patients will receive special instructions to prepare for this exam. Pak K & Kim S. You may be asked to drink some contrast material that will localize in the intestines and help the radiologist interpreting the exam. Except for intravenous injections, it is usually painless. These tests use radioactive materials called radiopharmaceuticalsor radiotracersto help diagnose and assess medical conditions.Robertson JS, Marr RB, Rosenblum M, Radeka V, Yamamoto YL (1983). It's a good idea to wear loose, comfortable clothes. It may be possible to wear these during the scan, although sometimes you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Imaging infections with molecular imaging technologies can improve diagnosis and treatment follow-up. Clinically, PET has been widely used to image bacterial infections using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to identify the infection-associated inflammatory response. Three different PET contrast agents have been developed to image bacterial infections in vivo are [ 18F] maltose, [32] [ 18F]maltohexaose, and [ 18F]2-fluorodeoxy sorbitol (FDS). [33] FDS has the added benefit of being able to target only Enterobacteriaceae. Cendes, Fernando (June 2013). "Neuroimaging in Investigation of Patients With Epilepsy". Continuum. 19 (3 Epilepsy): 623–642. doi: 10.1212/01.CON.0000431379.29065.d3. PMC 10564042. PMID 23739101. S2CID 19026991. It is important to remain still during the exam. Nuclear imaging causes no pain. However, having to remain still or in one position for long periods may cause discomfort. The light output, as the name indicates, is the number of scintillation photons produced by each incident photon. Again, this should be as high as possible, allowing the best spatial and energy resolution. Snyder DL, Miller MI, Thomas LJ, Politte DG (1987). "Noise and edge artifacts in maximum-likelihood reconstructions for emission tomography". IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging. 6 (3): 228–38. doi: 10.1109/tmi.1987.4307831. PMID 18244025. S2CID 30033603. It's important to relax, keep as still as possible, and avoid talking while you wait because moving and speaking can affect where the radiotracer goes in your body.

You will usually receive the radiotracer in an injection. Or you may swallow it or inhale it as a gas, depending on the exam. It accumulates in the area under examination. A special camera detects gamma ray emissions from the radiotracer. The camera and a computer produce pictures and supply molecular information. Good energy resolution—a small ratio of energy variance over energy—means that there are only small fluctuations in the energy measurement. This gives a means to distinguish against PET photons that have Compton scattered (and lost energy) before being measured. The energy resolution depends on the light output and the intrinsic energy resolution of the crystal. Research has shown that Bayesian methods that involve a Poisson likelihood function and an appropriate prior probability (e.g., a smoothing prior leading to total variation regularization or a Laplacian distribution leading to ℓ 1 {\displaystyle \ell _{1}} -based regularization in a wavelet or other domain), such as via Ulf Grenander's Sieve estimator [59] [60]

Leave metal objects including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins at home as they may affect the CT images. You may need to remove hearing aids and removable dental work.PET imaging with oxygen-15 indirectly measures blood flow to the brain. In this method, increased radioactivity signal indicates increased blood flow which is assumed to correlate with increased brain activity. Because of its 2-minute half-life, 15O must be piped directly from a medical cyclotron for such uses, which is difficult. By analysing the areas where the radiotracer does and does not build up, it's possible to work out how certain body functions are working.
