Monroe-Cassel is hands-down my favorite cook, and after the WoW and Hearthstone cookbook I had a dream of getting an Overwatch one from her. And here it is! The quality is the usual: she just pours her heart and soul into the lore and food research and it shows how much care this book was made with. I hugely enjoyed this book - it helped me explore new foods from my favourite characters and practice cooking, preparing food, etc. as this is something I've needed to continuously work on for my job.

Okay, so sometimes Overwatch drives us to drink. There are toxic players in any gaming community and there’s also people that are just bad at the game. Hanzo’s weakness includes the smell of Shimada Tempura, which brings a variety of sweet and umami tastes from deep fried vegetables. While the batter provides crispiness and some salt, it enhances incredibly savoury flavours from shrimp tempura. Based on the setting of Blizzard’s team-based shooter, Overwatch: The Official Cookbook (hereafter referred to as O:TOK) tries to translate the cosmopolitan flavor of the game’s science fiction setting into a diverse selection of dishes, deserts and drinks. The setting it pulls from always looks towards the future but this cookbook is firmly focused on the past. Its recipes are traditional, foundational and conventional. As a first-time cookbooker, that approach worked fine but, lore snippets aside, there’s little here to latch onto. Those cookbooks are made by people, sometimes even people in cooking franchises, but still just people with tastes and mindsets that have automatic biases. So uneven weights happen. Whether it's Italy getting a couple extra, or China, or France, there's always a slight slant. Sometimes that slant is even found in nothing but how the 'other country' dishes are all seasoned slightly wrong (like a slant Italian cookbook way underdoing it with the cayenne or turmeric in a dish from Marrakech). For this, we profiled the flavours of the most popular characters, according to global data from Competitive PC Players on Master Overwatch. There’s an important caveat to this. Some of these sections are much stronger than others. Not just in terms of how delicious or involved they are but in how compelling or appetizing they are.
