What I didn't: No option to plug in an AUX cord, no built-in button, and mid-range sound is not too good I’m supposed to end these buyer’s guides with questions like: How can you find the best retro headphones for you and your needs? When we did focus on the sonics, we noticed that the Panasonic RP-HTX7 had a big, full and warm sound, with a slight emphasis on the midbass. Music that was already generous in this area, such as the album Villa Manifesto from Slum Village, could sometimes sound a little too boomy, but it never thumped its way into a one-note drone and still had decent pitch definition and clarity. They aren’t as boomy as Beats – not anywhere close, in fact – but these Panasonic 80s do have remarkably deep, strong and dominant bass. And their high frequencies are sparkling and prominent, and yet have very low distortion and always sound sweet. Our review pair came in a rather fetching Sangria (red), but are also available in other colours. We think all the options look great, with their curved ear cups and pads, hint of metal used for the Panasonic logo, and short braided cables. The earcups don't fold away for portability, but they do have some flex in them so they can contour to your face.

The HTX80B is incredibly comfortable to wear, thanks to a lightweight build, soft foam pads on the earcups and headband that has as much flexibility as a world-class gymnast. The B & W P7 we have here is the follow upper for the P3, and it is a great step up. Leather pads and memory foam keeps them comfortable for hours, though they tend to get a little hot after longer sessions. We found that these headphones are well made and will last a long time. The plastic and metal components are made to be lightweight and portable. Besides being very convenient, their featherweight construction makes them a delight to wear.

And, for their price level, they have really amazing sound – again, not for audiophile purists, maybe (except when their audiophile purist friends aren’t looking), but for everybody else they have a clear, clean and highly dynamic sound, with tons of bass, bright clear highs and a much more sweet and musical signature than most others in their class.
