About this deal

In this gripping historical novel, the internationally bestselling author of The Mercies weaves a spellbinding tale of fear, transformation, courage, and love in sixteenth-century France. This was pretty intriguing for me and nicely finished up the threads of the storyline till the end. I am recommending it. In all versions of the myth, due to her curiosity, Pandora opened the vase/box left in her care which contained ‘gifts’ that were then released upon the world. These were noted as Illness, Violence, Deceit, Misery and Want. In what ways were these portrayed within the novel? She also captured the class system and the different varied characters of London in a realistic way- you could easily imagine the setting and the people. Even though I went into this novel hopeful, I have to confess that I didn’t have very high expectations. I have a serious weakness for anything inspired by Greek mythology, but I also can’t seem to help but judge said inspired stories a bit harshly, as well. And I’m just starting to get into historical fiction, which has always been a very hit-or-miss genre for me. But Pandora was recommended for fans of The Essex Serpent, which made me even more hopeful. My expectations were not only met, but exceeded. I can’t definitely see why it was compared to Sarah Perry’s work, and I can’t wait to get a physical copy to shelf next to The Essex Serpent. While not quite as philosophically profound, Pandora definitely scratched the same itch.

Pandora has been described as a visceral book that explores all five senses of Sight, Sound, Touch, Scent and Taste in eighteenth-century London. How well do you feel the novel portrayed them? What parts were especially evocative?Having finished school Dora now focuses her ambitions in designing jewellery, so when an ornate vase arrives at the shop, her interested is piqued immediately. Not because this treasure is a thing of beauty and mysterious, but she is able to take inspiration from its rare qualities and designs, when designing her own jewellery range. However, her interest only grows in a different direction when the secrecy, value and historical reference attributed to this piece of antique comes to light. Friends scenes go viral for going from funny to 'heartbreaking' in the wake of Matthew Perry's tragic death aged 54

Dora’s parents are only revealed through the memories of other characters. In Dora’s eyes her mother and father were good people, whilst Hezekiah took a different view. Based on this, do you think Hezekiah is a sympathetic character? There is a level of ambiguity in Pandora in regards to the pithos being the real Pandora’s Box. What are your thoughts? The author drops hints throughout the novel and while there was no huge twist at the end, I really enjoyed the story. I particularly enjoyed the rather ambiguous ending when it came to the identity of the mysterious man Edward met who urged him to speak to Dora. This critically acclaimed novel is a retelling of Homer’s Iliad, told from the perspective of Briseis, a Trojan queen who is captured and forced to become the concubine of Achilles. It is a brave, powerful story about survival and resilience, which in no way shies away from the horrors of war and the cruelty women suffered at the hands of their enslavers. There are harrowing scenes including child murder, gang rape and suicide making it a ruthless story, but one that should not be ignored. After the tragic death of her parents during an archaeological excavation, Dora Blake is now living with her uncle, Hezekiah, in her parents’ antiquities shop. But Hezekiah does not have the interest in antiquities her parents had and he is slowly destroying her parents’ once loved business. Dora is desperate to escape from her uncles’ care, and is hoping to turn her love of drawing and jewelry making into a career, giving her the independence she craves. When her uncle imports a Grecian vase, one so old that it predates time itself, Dora feels an immediate connection. While anyone else who touches it or means it harm is instantly cursed, Dora continues to be the only one to open it and she uses its Greek inscriptions and drawings as inspiration for her jewellery. But Hezekiah has darker plans for the vase, and even darker plans for Dora, and when Dora realizes the true importance of the urn, her life is put at greater risk. I love historical fiction and Greek mythology so Pandora instantly appealed to me. Pandora is Susan Stokes-Chapman’s debut novel and I’ll be honest, I fell in the love with the cover. What a beautiful book! Although beautiful books don’t always mean brilliant books, the premise intrigued me and I couldn’t wait to read this one. Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman Review: Plot
