Snow’ had me captivated from start to finish and I could feel every crunch of ice walked on and more. He has a way with words like Peter May and I realised this especially when reading Peter May’s ‘A Winter Grave’ I could so feel the cold, wet snow etc etc in this Chiller. Such a good writer! Reply Beginning with a murder in 2015, both murderer and victim’s identities initially unknown, it forces three friends to face the events that determined the path their lives would take fifty years ago. But... 50 years later, a brutal homicide will unbury that dark period of their Past — it was time for the inevitable confrontation!...

REVIEW: ‘Runaway’ by Peter May | Buried Under Books

The latest book in the Lincoln Lawyer series comes out this month. This will be the 7th book in that series, and the 41st book in the Bosch Universe. Harry Bosch also plays a big part in this book. Five of us had run away that fateful night just over a month before. Only three of us would be going home. And nothing, nothing would ever be the same again." But it was a hell of an adventure, and in a way I suppose it was inevitable that, having become a writer, it would one day provide the basis for a story. That story turned out to be Runaway, my latest crime novel. And when I shake my head now in recollection of our stupidity, I also revel in the opportunity that the story gave me to relive a little of my past, playing God with reality and reshaping it in fiction. It is astonishing how youthful ignorance can put adversity so easily aside to breed baseless optimism.Guided by a common dream, 5 boys flee from Glasgow to London. However, less than an year later, 3 of them returned — what happened in London has been buried but not forgotten... London, 2015. A man lies dead in a one-room flat. His killer looks on, remorseless. What started with five teenagers following a dream five decades before has been transformed over the intervening decades into a waking nightmare that might just consume them all. From the latest Scandinavian serial killer to Golden Age detective stories, we love our crime novels! The second journey in 2015 with an ailing Maurie in many ways reflects the first, with flashes of humour and heart-wrenching sadness along the way. But for me it is the quiet achiever, Luke, who silently steals the show. On 15 January, Quercus is publishing Peter May’s latest book, Runaway. Well known for his Lewis trilogy– set in the Hebridean Islands – as well as his recent hit Entry Island which is set on an island in the Gulf of St Lawrence, Canada, Runaway is a standalone that… umm… really doesn’t feature any islands at all. Instead, it’s the story of a group of friends who run away from life in Glasgow to find fame and fortune in London. That part of the story is semi-biographical, as May did exactly that when he was 17. However, in Runaway wrapped up in that experience is a murder mystery. Below, we bring you a feature by Peter May all about the 1960s, what it was like to run away, how he researched the book 50 years later, and more.

Runaway: a high-stakes mystery thriller from the master of

Despite how the mystery aspect was pushed behind the story of life, it was still an interesting mystery. As you worked through the story it became painfully clear how certain things were to end, yet you did not have the specifics. The specifics were what you were holding out for, curious as to exactly what would happen to each of the characters. In addition to the Lewis Trilogy, the Enzo Files, and the China Thrillers, Peter was also able to write six standalone novels including his very first novel, The Reporter published in 1978. In this novel, investigative reporter, Colin Anderson, unknowingly puts his life and the life of his assistant, Janis Sinclair, on the line when he begins to uncover what could very well be the biggest international sabotage of all time. Peter’s other standalone novels include Fallen Hero 1979, Hidden Faces 1981 and 1982, The Noble Path 1992 and 1993, Virtually Dead 2010, and Entry Island 2014. Television and Film I thoroughly enjoyed Runaway by Scottish author Peter May; my first by this author but most definitely not my last! A gripping crime novel, filled with fast paced, heart thumping tension; plus intrigue, emotional nostalgia and flashes of humour throughout. Told in the two timelines of 1965 and 2015 it worked incredibly well in showing the differences fifty years makes. I have no hesitation in recommending Runaway very highly. Each had their own reason to leave and their experiences test the bonds of friendship, eventually taking a tragic turn. Of the five who left Glasgow, only three will return. Loving your books now that I’m retired and have time for a read and it was a pleasure to work with Peter and Janice on machair days Reply Five of us had run away that fateful night just over a month before. Only three of us would be going home. And nothing, nothing would ever be the same again.

The settings are finely drawn. The characters believable, three dimensional and empathetic. I love their mission, and the ending has more than a few twists. This is more than a work of crime fiction, this is more than just a contemporary narrative, this is more than the sum these elements … so much more. This is a story of life, of death, of adventure, of the potential of youth and the potential of older age and mostly this is the story of enduring friendships. And this is about pain, without pain you have nothing. This thriller series is popular for the tempestuous relationship between Chinese detective Li Yan, and acerbic American pathologist Dr. Margaret Campbell from Chicago. The China Thrillers landed Peter the only honorary membership of the Chinese Crime Writer’s Association awarded to a westerner for its vibrant portrayal of contemporary Chinese life. Runaway is told as two parallel stories about the same group of men, as they were in 1965 and as they are in 2015. The parts about the sixties in London were just brilliant with frequent nostalgic mentions of the music and events of the day. I enjoyed all of the characters and felt a little sorry that they had not all had better lives. Here is the “story behind the story” and how the inspiration for RUNAWAY came from his own experiences…

Publication Order of Lewis Trilogy Books

Everything starts to go horribly wrong for them from the beginning of their road trip. Finally disillusioned, dirty and exhausted, and with very little money, they arrive at their destination. In London their hopes for a music career are dashed and they fall in with people who claim to have connections with the entertainment business. They stay at a place where alcohol and drugs are available. After adventures and misadventures in London, three of the bitterly disappointed young men return to Glasgow. The book begins with a murder in 2015. We don't know the identity of the killer or victim until much later in the book. I have yet to read Runaway (I look forward to it), but did enjoy your music video with Stephen. I also remember Ian Looker. Is he still in Bristol? – I partly live there these days. With a musician, as it happens! The book is beautifully written, funny and poignant, and very different from any I have previously read by the versatile Peter May”

Runaway by Peter May | Goodreads

I must say that the indentity of the perpetrator of the coercive and criminal scenarios made all the sense in the world to me, and the nature of the disaster in the past was very deeply sad if not terribly unusual. The pure-D unadulterated Peter-May-ness of the resolution to the disasters past and present stems from his utter, abject inability to leave a thread to dangle. Every last end is tightly bound up. I’ve worked through most of his books now – I have Coffin Road and all except the first of the China Thrillers to catch up on (the list being longer than I’d like) – and I can honestly say I have yet to be disappointed. The Enzo Files weren’t quite what I had been hoping for, yet they were still fun. None of them have managed to live up to the brilliance of the Lewis trilogy, but I’ve still be pleased with them all. With Runaway, we have his usual four-star standard.Have read The Lewis Trilogy, The Enzo Files, and just finished the First of he China Books…The research in each book is outstanding. I have enjoyed each book and look forward to reading all of Peter May’s books. Reply Peter May has done it again. He’s created yet another thrilling read, one that pulls you in from the start until the end.
