Perhaps the most intriguing upgrade to this year’s Google phones is the least visible. Inside the Pixel 6 resides the first Google-produced processor: the Google Tensor. This is an octa-core part that looks similar in makeup to the Snapdragon 888. Built on a 5nm manufacturing process, it has a pair of 2.8GHz ARM-X1 cores for running high-performance jobs, two “medium” 2.25GHz ARM A76 cores and four low-power ARM A55 efficiency cores running at 1.8GHz. There isn’t much that wasn’t already leaked about the Google Pixel 6 prior to launch, but here’s confirmation of one key fact. Somehow undercutting all of this year’s high-end flagship launches so far, the Pixel 6 is an absolute bargain with very few compromises.However, the proof is in the photos – and whether compared to images captured on a flagship such as the iPhone 12 Pro, or earlier Google phones such as the Google Pixel 5a, the Pixel 6 takes better photos. There’s more nuance in the color and shadows, along with more true-to-life temperature that reflects real conditions. Google didn't disclose the Pixel 6’s modem at its launch event, nor when we asked for additional details about it. After some research with Sascha Segan, PCMag's lead mobile analyst, we're confident the phone uses Samsung's Exynos 5123 modem. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are the first phones to ship with the Google Tensor SoC. Designed by Google specifically for the Pixel lineup, its processors, coprocessors, instruction sets, and other software are all in harmony to create a heterogeneous computing experience.

Face Unblur can remove the blur from a face in motion if the camera can recognize the face and it isn't too blurred . Again, it can't work miracles. According to Google, Tensor delivers “up to 80% more performance than Pixel 5”, which runs on a Snapdragon 765G. In typical Google fashion, the search giant says its AI features enable better performance across a slew of machine-learning-specific tasks. Magic Eraser, Real Tone, and Face Unblur are a few of the new camera features that the Tensor SoC makes possible. Except for Real Tone, which uses inclusive color science for more accurate representations of BIPOC people, none will fix a photo that's seriously messed up. Whether that matters is another question: like the Samsung phones mentioned above, the Pixel 6 breezes through browsing, watching media, and other tasks, without a hitch. Those scores are also notably higher than that of the Google Pixel 5, which, with its Snapdragon 765G chipset, got a Geekbench 5 score of 1600. The combination of 8GB of RAM and the Tensor chip saw the Pixel 6 achieve an average Geekbench 5 score of 2837 – which is just above the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 at 2801, and below the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus at 3034. Note that the Pixel 6 Pro didn’t score particularly higher at 2895, suggesting the Tensor chipset may not hit the performance levels of Snapdragon 888-powered phones.

Nevertheless, we kept the Pixel 6 in the official Google case throughout testing, and while it doesn’t add much weight, it did make the already generously-sized phone feel bigger – which might be alarming for those who like smaller handsets. It would be an understatement to say Steven Winkelman is obsessed with mobile technology. Since joining PCMag as a mobile analyst in 2019, he’s reviewed over 100 phones and tablets. Before that he covered mobile and wearable tech as a staff writer at Digital Trends. The Samsung Galaxy S22 is the highest profile Android alternative to the Pixel 6, since it's the bottom entry in Samsung's latest flagship line. It costs a little more and is more powerful, but the Pixel's software has it beat, and Google's phone has a more distinctive design. The OnePlus 9 is slightly older than the Pixel 6, but there's no OnePlus 10 (just a Pro model) so it's the closest OnePlus alternative. It's a similar price and has slightly more power, but its cameras aren't a match for the Pixel's. At such a reasonable price and with such a tempting array of features, Google has a winner on its hands. Aside from the “love it or hate it” design, the only real fly in the ointment is the Pixel 6’s battery life, which comes in well under its competitors. But it’s hardly a deal-breaker at just under 20 hours.It's worth noting that you can only get this color with 128GB of storage, and that it will only be available in limited quantities. Google Pixel 6 Pro colors How about that Magic Eraser tool? In a word, it’s magic. If a stranger, overhead cable or lamppost is photobombing what would otherwise be an Insta-worthy picture, all you’ve got to do is edit the image, select Magic Eraser in the Tools section and draw an outline with your finger around what you want removed. The Pixel 6 then takes care of the rest in a couple of seconds. The display does tend towards a more vibrant mix of colors than handsets such as the iPhone 12 Pro –and that isn’t only in the overall palette, either. The Pixel 6’s OLED screen displayed greater contrast in adjacent colors, going from brighter to darker hues; side-by-side evaluation of contrast saw the iPhone 12 Pro’s display flatten more of the color together. The Pixel 6 looks up to snuff and isn’t all that different in size compared with the Pixel 6 Pro, with a screen that’s a mere 0.3in smaller. Of course, this means that it’s still a gigantic slab of a handset – measuring 159 x 75 x 8.9mm (WHD) – and it’s not the lightest of phones, either, tipping the scales at 207g.

Comparing the Google Tensor processor with the popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform is difficult. Google created the Tensor SoC to realize experiences for Pixel devices that would otherwise be impossible or cumbersome. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888,on the other hand, was developed as a turnkey solution for smartphone manufacturers; it provides plenty of power, but the manufacturer has to figure out exactly how to create experiences within the limitations of the platform. The most important thing to note is that the Pixel 6 is the very first handset to be powered by Google’s in-house Tensor chipset. Ditching Qualcomm and avoiding Exynos and Kirin, Tensor promises a handful of performance and efficiency improvements over last year’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G, and it represents a bold new future for Google. Other improvements within Android 12 include changes to widget settings, a one-handed mode and a new AppSearch feature. This allows you to search for stuff within an app in the phone’s settings menu, rather than launching the app itself. It worked relatively well on the shot of the river above — the moving water has indeed been blurred. The leaves that overlap the water from the camera’s perspective were even preserved pretty well. But the second photo had people walking through the frame, and it sort of made them look like ghosts. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; real long exposures would behave the same way. But it’s something to look out for.We tested the Pixel 6 on Verizon’s 5G network in Chicago and recorded admirable speeds, averaging 168Mbps down and 78Mbps up. While the Pixel 6 Pro’s battery offers even more capacity at 5,000mAh battery, the Pixel 6 comfortably makes it through a full day of use. Google claims the phone will last for up to 24 hours, which can be extended to 48 hours with the help of the Extreme Battery Saver mode, although we’d expect less than that with our testing. Boring isn’t bad though – not everyone wants a phone that stands out, and you still get a grey accent above the camera.
