Description

The Pure Evoke C-D6 is an all-in-one music system that features an FM/DAB/DAB+ radio, a CD player and Bluetooth. The C-D6 is part of Pure’s popular and stylish Evoke range of digital radios, and comes in an attractive walnut finish. Unlike most radios in the Evoke range, the C-D6 has two built-in speakers giving it stereo sound. What’s more, when you turn this device on and start using it, you’re sure to be impressed by how much value it offers. The wood surround not only delivers an aesthetically pleasing radio set but also allows for deeper sound quality. Other features include twin alarms, which can be set to a station of your choice, and the touch-sensitive Snoozehandle which sits on top of the radio. There’s no Internet radio – for that you’ll need to investigate the Evoke F4 or rival radios such as the Roberts Stream 93i. Some of these radios cost more than the regular Evoke D4 with Bluetooth radio, but they are a good option if matching the radio to your decor is important to you.

Performance and use

The range has expanded over the years to include models of varying sizes colours and features culminating for now, with the Evoke D6 with Bluetooth.

What’s more, the real-wood casing combined with the embedded digital amplifier in this product makes for a sound that makes you want to sit up and listen. You can almost feel the music move through you with a radio as powerful as this.We begin with a CD, The National’s High Violet. There does seem to be plenty of power here; Terrible Love is allowed to open the record with its alternately plodding then racing rhythmic motion, never feeling lightweight or feeble.

On the front of the device, you’ll see the iconic Pure logo, two sizable stereo speakers, tuning and volume knobs, along with a range of buttons for controlling your CD player and radio. The stereo has a range of control options, but if you’re not opting to use its mobile app, you’re going to spend time looking at its 2.8” color screen. It’s a TFT display type, which pales in comparison to what you’d get from a modern mobile device. But in a device that’s ostensibly to be listened to rather than looked at we thought the screen didn't negatively impact the overall experience. By the time we finished our Pure Evoke CD-6 review, it was clear to us that this radio is one that you can easily fall in love with.

Its main flaw is the CD player, which can be temperamental and slow to read CDs. However, the Evoke C-D6 performs very well on the whole. Similar radios Dialogue heard through the studio of Radio 5 Live sounds relatively warm and detailed. It’s easy to latch onto what people are saying. The C-D6 feels sturdy and has a good amount of weight to it, though at roughly 4 kg it’s not too heavy to carry. The walnut-effect design gives it a classy, premium look and adds to the depth of sound. If being able to stream music from a Bluetooth-enabled device like a smartphone or laptop is important to you, the Evoke D4 with Bluetooth is a good option. Otherwise you should go for the regular Evoke D4, which costs less.

Pure Evoke C-D6 review | What Hi-Fi?

Detail levels are fine for the money and the general balance isn’t bass or treble heavy. Push the Pure hard and its balanced approach stops everything from descending into a crashy, brash affair. The Evoke F3 looks much more modern than the D1, D2 and D4 models, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your taste. FeaturesThe Evoke C-D6’s CD player has a slot-loading design so you just push the CD in rather than placing it on a tray. The CD player seems to be temperamental as many buyers have had issues with it stopping working after a few months of use, or being very slow to read CDs. The system looks pleasant enough and offers plenty of functionality, similar to many other Pure products, like the Avalon or Siesta Rise.
