Feet: Use a ruler or tape measure to measure your foot (from the heel to the tip of your longest toe) Be sure to measure both feet. The Trekmates replacement straps for gaiters are made from a durable rubberized material and are cut to fit ensuring you get the exact length required. Try using bungee cord for the string, but thread it through heavy plastic electrical sleeving or even heavy heatshrink tubing. This usually works wonders.

I haven’t tried this, but I remember reading somewhere about adventure racers who would drill a horizontal hole through the sole (or maybe midsole) of the shoe. Thread the gaiter strap though the hole and the outer sole of the shoe protects it.

I had an instep strap give out while I was hiking. Before I could replace it I noticed that the gaiters worked just as well without it. Since then I have continued to use these gaiters with no instep strap. If you have an eyelet each side, just feed the bungee cord through from the inside and tie a large knot on the outside. This lets the edge of the gaiter get close to the ground. I love my low gaiters but I don’t love replacing the instep string/strap every 100 miles. I recall someone saying that they put the string around the heel of the shoe, but has anyone found other answers? Delivered Monday to Saturday 8am-8pm, excluding bank holidays. Replacement Rubber Straps For Gaiters Paramo Replacement Rubber Straps For Gaiters

My hiking partner and I tested six gaiters of various styles in the rugged wilderness of Northern New York. I’m surprised to say we preferred gaiters that can be taken on and off while leaving your shoes or boots on. This way there’s no extra step to remember before putting shoes on, the gaiters are easier to handle while muddy or wet, and there’s no need for a heel attachment point. Keep in mind that gaiters with instep straps, zippers, or Velcro do present a durability issue for extended periods of use. Any proper gear closet should include at least one pair of hiking gaiters. I like the results of my experiments drilling holes through the midsole, but the straps still fail via abrasion when in rough terrain. A weak point in the design of some gaiters is the cord that runs under the sole of your boot. While some models have a beefy (and heavy) strap, some have just a nylon cord. After stomping around on rough terrain, the cord gets frayed and cut. As it’s on the bottom of your boot, it’s hard to notice when it’s almost cut through.

SNAKE GAITERS are simple, tough and do the job. Manufactured from quality materials at a great price, they are ideal for students, with a shorter length that still gives great protection. The main body of the gaiter is constructed out of 15D eVENT fabric that provides waterproof and breathable protection. This gaiter is claimed to last most users one full thru-hike, and although durability is evident, this wouldn’t be my first choice for maintained trails or for trail running. The taller height did provide respite on days traveling through dense overgrowth, rain, and deep mud. However, in our experience, the top elastic circled the widest part of the calf in a way that became uncomfortable with long periods of use. As such, this is a great lightweight option for hikers traveling shorter distances, possibly with pants, and are looking for a gaiter that can be easily used with boots or low shoes. Things to Consider Before Buying the Best Hiking Gaiters Footwear Take your actual body measurements as they are more accurate than measuring over your clothes or shoes.

Clever ideas all around. I also enjoy that most of these solutions would probably solve my other gaiter-related pet peeve; the nylon accessory cord I have been using accumulates so much snow and ice that I have avoided using my lows altogether in the winter. Typical that Berghaus didn't recognize the search, repairing items is a thing of the past and we're now expected to discard our gear at the slightest sign of wear/ damage and by a new one. A range of gaiter attachment styles were included as part of this test and each has certain benefits. What’s great is that many trail shoes are already gaiter compatible. Popular options such as the Altra Lone Peak 7 and Brooks Cascadia 17 have Velcro tabs added above the heel. Many trail runners also have pre-installed D-ring on the laces for easy connection. The gaiters I enjoyed most for this test didn’t require either of those features for proper use. Find a shoe that’s most comfortable and then a gaiter that adapts well.
