A great book to learn about the water cycle.Grahame Baker-Smith is a huge talent in picture book illustration, and his images of the natural world here are deep, vibrant and painterly, which will absorb slightly older picture book readers in their watery depths. Issac is playing in his favourite pool on the mountainside when it begins to rain. Upon emptying his little jar of water into the pool, he follows the journey of the water through streams, over waterfalls, along rivers and out into the vast open sea. Wondering where the little jar of water will go next, readers are taken on an epic journey of water. The story shows how we are all linked by water and provides a more emotional and real approach to the water cycle. All the drawings are so great. I love the story because it tells us about the tiny bit of water and its journey from small to big oceans.

It teaches children about the water cycle in a way that isn't simply spitting facts, it puts it into a real life context and how it affects different people in different locations which I found really lovely. Tijdens het spelen begint het te regenen, hij giet een glazen pot gevuld met een visje en water leeg in de waterplas en probeert de weg van het water te volgen. Door de bergstroompjes naar beneden. Daar waar de stroom verandert in een waterval en als rivier verder stroomt naar beneden, door het landschap. Steeds verder en verder, tot het zijn weg vindt naar de oceaan. Naar donkere dieptes en verre landen. Tot het uiteindelijk verdampt, opgaat in wolken en het zijn weg naar Izak weer terugvindt. This book is fantastic, it has beautiful illustrations to inspire art learning and shares the story of the water cycle an i unique way, showing how water can be used and its importance. Non-fiction books take many forms from the overtly factual information books, to a more subtle “fun” form. And without doubt there is a place for all forms, I think any way we can get non-fiction books out there, the better. The Rhythm of the Rain take non-fiction to another level, by injecting heart and emotion and scale into a very science and nature based theme and it really works so beautifully. During my stint as a teacher, I would have loved to have something like this to support my teaching. But, you know, non-fiction, education value aside, this book is just wonderful. beautiful and astounding to look at.
