Use grease paint to add colors for burns, scrapes, or dripping blood. This is the best bet if you want to craft a burn, bleeding wound, or infection. Use a thin paintbrush or cotton swab and dip it into a small amount of your paint. Then, slowly drag the bristles against your skin where you want to apply the color. You can use a single shade of paint to give the wound some subtle color, or blend multiple colors together for a brighter, dynamic wound. [8] X Research source Pour some of the liquified 3-D Gel into a small container to cool. Be sure to test the gel’s temperature before applying to the skin. Collodion is used in the cleaning of optics such as telescope mirrors. The collodion is applied to the surface of the optic, usually in two or more layers. Sometimes a piece of thin cloth is applied between the layers, to hold the collodion together for easy removal. After the collodion dries and forms a solid sheet covering the optic, it is carefully peeled away, taking contamination with it.

To create a fresher looking scar, outline where you want the scar to be with the Bloody Rose hue from the ProColorRing™ Bruise Wheel as the base before applying the Rigid Collodion. Then repeat the steps until you achieve the look you desire.

Many wart-remover preparations consist of acetic acid and salicylic acid in an acetone collodion base used in the treatment of warts by keratolysis. So yeah, this collodion might be a little more fragile than I’m used to, but I think I can easily get used to that. We like to use our 3-D Gel in Flesh color to create a raised burn. This product comes in solid form, so it needs to be warmed before use. You can heat the container in hot water until the gel is liquified or place the bottle directly in the microwave at 5 second intervals until ready to use. Repeat steps 1 and 2 several times until you achieve the look you want. The more you apply, the deeper the scar appears.

This SFX product can be used to intensify cosplays that call for scars in their typical look such as the Joker, Harry Potter, or Katarina from League of Legends. Rigid Collodion is also great for simulating wrinkles or severed fingers. Flammable, syrupy solution of nitrocellulose in ether and alcohol Alfred Stieglitz, c.1894, collodion print by Frank S. Herrmann As the Collodion dries, it literally shrinks your skin by pulling it inward. This will create a small indentation in your skin that should almost perfectly resemble a scar.I'm trying to do some facial scars (I wanted to do some chest scars as well) and bought the Mehron rigid collodion since everyone seems to use/like that. Looking to jump into the world of SFX makeup but not sure where to start? We’re going to break it down to the basics for you. From building a kit that contains the essentials to step-by-step directions on four SFX staples - scars, cuts, bruises, and burns - below we share the tools and techniques for creating amazing effects despite being new to the craft. Continue applying the Collodion until your wound is entirely covered. Reload your brush periodically whenever you feel it drying out on your skin. Continue working your way over the scar or wound and cover each section 2-3 times. If you’re covering a wider portion of skin for a burn or scrape, work in horizontal or vertical strips so that you cover the area entirely. [15] X Research source Use a light powder foundation to soften the shine of the Collodion. Grab a powder foundation that’s slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Load up a clean makeup brush or cotton pad with your foundation and dab it over the area where you applied the Rigid Collodion. This will take some of the shine out of the Collodion and make the wound appear more real. [18] X Research source

Skip paint or makeup and use the Collodion alone for wrinkles and old scars. Rigid Collodion on its own will make your skin appear darker. It will also give your skin a rough, dried-out texture. Don’t apply any makeup or paint before applying the Rigid Collodion if you want to add wrinkles or really old scars that won’t stand out a ton. [10] X Research source Use the spatula to press and smooth out the edges until they meld into the skin, then use your spatula to create a gash in the wax to achieve a realistic looking cut. SFX novices can master the bruise makeup effect with Mehron’s cream-based ProColorRing Bruise wheel, which contains all the colors you need to build up a believable bruise: While in Paris, René Dagron became familiar with the collodion wet plate and collodion-albumen dry plate processes which he would later adapt to his microfilm and Stanhope production techniques. Ménard and Florès Domonte (1846) "Sur la pyroxyline" (On pyroxyline), Comptes rendus … , 23: 1187–1188.Spread spirit gum remover over the Collodion to wipe it off. Spirit gum is a skin-safe adhesive that makeup artists use to attach prosthetics. [20] X Research source Spirit gum remover, which is typically used to remove spirit gum, also happens to be the best option for taking off Rigid Collodion. Simply pour a dollop into a cotton ball or pad and wipe the area repeatedly using soft, repetitive strokes. Once the Collodion is flakey and soft, gently peel it off of your skin. [21] X Research source The more layers you apply, the more dramatic and deep your scar is going to look. When administrating Rigid Collodion, wait for the first layer to completely dry before applying the next. Rigid Collodion works best in less mobile areas such as the cheek, forehead, or nose. While you can opt to use this SFX product in areas such as the sides of the mouth (i.e. for a Joker cosplay), it won’t last as long and will start to peel as the day goes on. When you’re satisfied with your scar, I also advise coating the scar with a finishing powder to eliminate the shine. When it comes to special effects makeup (or SFX makeup), products can fall under tiers ranging from Easy to Difficult. While Rigid Collodion isn’t difficult to use, I would place it in the Difficult category purely because you must know the hazards of using this product. There’s no way to remove a portion of the Rigid Collodion without ruining the rest of your work, so just take it slow.
