Shivani wants to live in a world where laughter is the cure to pretty much everything. Since she can't claim "Serial Bingewatcher" as an occupation, she'll settle for wedding/portrait photographer at Lin and Jirsa & marketing coordinator here at SLR Lounge. For those rare moments when you won't find a camera in her hand, she will be dancing, eating a donut, or most likely watching Seinfeld. You can easily find the perfect focus without having to touch the focus mode switch. This feature is a game-changer if you are shooting in manual mode and your object is darting between lighter and darker spots. AF-D version is weaker in almost all respects, except maybe on bokeh ( probably those soft corners are helping here) According to the DxOMark review this lens achieves a resolution of 36Mpx, which is the same as the Tamron 85mm. So why is this lens "the sharpest", when another lens has the same numbers. A negative score indicates barrel distortion, a positive score pincushion. A score of zero signifies no distortion.

Both lenses are pretty equal in terms of sharpness. I think the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art has nicer bokeh though. It also is much better corrected for LoCA and purple fringing than the Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE which suffers from serious purple fringing. Furthermore the bokeh of the Sony 1.8/85 shows a lot of bokeh fringing as well which is totally absent with the Sigma. To test PF, I did some test shots at people with bright sunshine. PF was observed and did not disappear until f/4.5. The Sigma Art line was designed for artists who value unbeatable expressive performance over compactness and multifunction. As expected, the Sigma Art series offers premium image quality with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. This feature delivers distinct sharp and crisp photographs in darker venues.

Both lateral and axial (or longitudinal) chromatic aberrations are extremely negligible, even when uncorrected in-camera. Serious portrait photographers need this focal length in their tool kit because it is just a portrait essential. It definitely isn’t a recreational lens to have on hand at all times, as it is highly specified and catered to perform in the realm of portraiture.

We've almost completely stopped recommending fast third-party lenses because the AF is inconsistent. Yes, the optical quality of the Sigma Art lenses is UNBEATABLE... but every single time we've tested them against native lenses, they miss focus far more. In our 85mm f/1.4 comparison, the Sigma missed focus so much that it was more accurate to simply manually focus it. Same applies to the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 f/1.8 lenses. Focus calibration can't fix it; it's the result of camera manufacturer's not testing and optimizing the camera bodies for those lenses. With many applications in aerospace and other industries, glass ceramics is an extremely tough type of crystallized glass that serves as the foundation for Clear Glass Ceramics. While featuring the high transmittance required of optical devices, this advanced new material combines greater hardness than chemically strengthened glass and greater flexibility than sapphire crystal glass. These qualities make Clear Glass Ceramics the ideal material for protective lens filters. However when you are in the market for a 85 mm lens with very fast AF this will be the better option.
