About this deal

I did some tests in Game Mode, and it didn’t offer any dramatic improvement over the normal operations of the drives in the benchmarks I use. That’s to be expected as Game Mode, according to Western Digital, is meant to enhance performance with game workloads, and synthetic benchmarks don’t have the same workload. The SN770 can fit in a Sony PlayStation 5, but WD does not claim compatibility with that gaming console. Its sequential read speed is below Sony's recommended 5,500MBps, and the PS5 does not support HMB architecture. The XPG Atom 50 suffers the same limitations, but ADATA still touts it as PS5-compatible. (Any M.2 SSD used in a PS5 will be a secondary drive primarily used for game storage, so peak speed is not the primary consideration. But we still recommend looking for a drive that meets Sony's spec and asserts compatibility.) Since 2004, I have worked on PCMag’s hardware team, covering at various times printers, scanners, projectors, storage, and monitors. I currently focus my testing efforts on 3D printers, pro and productivity displays, and drives and SSDs of all sorts. But not everyone wants to pay for these ultimate performers, and by turning down the flame a little, some makers are offering serviceable solutions that more can afford. Details about the extent of our regulation by the Financial Conduct Authority are available from us on request.

The synthetic performance as recorded by ATTO and AS SSD show the SN770 trails the Crucial P5 in terms of reads, although the writes are much closer. The 4K performance is relatively impressive though and shows that the SN770 has something to offer in this crowded marketplace. It's not too surprising that this drive outperforms Samsung's DRAM-less offering, as that is a PCIe 3.0 drive, after all, but the extent to which it does is impressive.

Something DRAM-less this way comes.

Get up to 20% more power efficiency at maximum speed over the previous generation 3 (1TB model) for an even better overall gaming experience on your portable rig. The SN770 isn’t the first NVMe drive I’ve seen with this configuration from Western Digital. It previously used this approach on the

But those that work their SSDs hard should consider the 600- and 1200TBW endurance of the 1- and 2TB drives. My advice is unchanged on this subject, in that if TBW (Total Bytes Written) is potentially an issue for you, then buy the largest capacity drives to better distribute the workload between NAND cells.
