Description

As mentioned previously, The Story of the World provides a reading list with nonfiction and fiction books that parents can introduce to dive into topics more deeply, exploring them from a different perspective and adding a more pressure-free, literature-based element to their history study. Similarly, because it does offer a wide, flexible assortment of activities to choose from, parents can omit those that seem too challenging, time intensive or just aren’t a good fit. Volume 4: The Modern Age continues from 1850 up through the end of the twentieth century. Meant for grades four through eight, this volume is more like a history text than the other books. It uses storytelling within the context of relating historical events rather than telling selected stories, making it more comprehensive in coverage than earlier books. In my opinion, this is one of the best options for world history for upper elementary through junior high levels. One issue that might give some parents pause is one of omission. Religion and its influence are seldom mentioned. Nevertheless, this is a very engaging history resource that should work for most families. That said, The Story of the World is a homeschool history program and, because it is a history series written in a more casual, narrative format and because it can be read aloud, read independently or even listened to as an audiobook, we feel its titles can be used with students outside these intend age ranges.

MUSIC: Listen to some Indian music. What sorts of instruments do you hear? How does the music make you feel? How does it make your body want to move? The Story of the World is a homeschooling world history curriculum from The Well Trained Mind that is geared toward the elementary-aged child.

NETFLIX INSTANT: Egyptian Secrets of the Afterlife, Egypt: Engineering an Empire, Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs: IMAX Volume Four: The Modern Age: from Victoria’s Empire to the End of the USSR The final volume helps readers understand the American Civil War, the rapid growth of technologies such as the railroad and electricity; new movements for freedom in Africa and Asia; the Space Race; the Cold War and its conclusion, and people as varied as Gandhi, Hitler, Evita Peron, and Martin Luther King. Includes maps and illustrations.

On the downside, as with the program’s use of encyclopedias, those who wish to incorporate this literature-based approach to teaching can, at the end of the day, find themselves purchasing and needing to store quite a few extra books. Test Books The Story of the World’s lesson guides helpfully provide a short (1-2 sentence) brief for each book, so parents can more easily figure out ahead of time which title they would prefer to use in a lesson (if any). After the discussion, ask the kids to give you an oral narration of what they learned. This doesn’t have to be a long narration, just a sentence or two from your youngest kids or it can be a lengthy summary from an older child.

The curriculum also offers a robust activity book and test booklet to go along with each volume. The Story of the World Review: Exactly How the Curriculum Works INTERACTIVE: See how natural forces and artificial techniques that have created mummies around the world The activity books provide students with an assortment of maps, as well as step-by-step instructions that will have them find, label and outline key the areas and events that they are learning about. COOKING: Learn about Ancient Roman recipes and try one or two. Libum (sweet cheesecake), Mulsum (honeyed wine) (adults only of course) and Boiled Eggs with Pine Nut Sauce look pretty easy!

You may choose to break up the lesson over several days, or do it all in one day. It just depends on what your schedule is and how long your kids can stay engaged. After the review questions, we would flip to the map sheet. For the lesson, the child is asked to find Sicily and color it yellow.

After each chapter or even section has been read, students and parents can move on to the lessons in the volume’s accompanying activity book.

What We Don’t Love About The Story of the World

A local official told AFP that the rebels occupied the camp immediately after it was vacated by the UN mission.
