About this deal

Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits to grow, as they’re compact, ideal for containers and produce deliciously sweet berries from early summer onwards. There are summer-fruiting, perpetual and alpine types to choose from, with many delicious varieties of each. One of the advantages of this type of support is that it can accommodate beds that not perfectly rectangular (and none of mine are). You can just shift the assemblies to get the coverage you need.

Bird netting comes in a variety of mesh openings – it ranges from 1/4” to 3/4”. While the thought of a smaller mesh sounds enticing, my basic biology knowledge tells me that strawberries may need pollinators like bees. So the medium to larger size might be a better choice since it ensures that bees and other pollinators can reach blossoms. Summer-fruiting and perpetual strawberries can be bought as potted plants or bare-root plantlets known as runners: Alpine varieties are often sold alongside herb plants at the garden centre; you can also grow them from seed With summer-fruiting strawberries, once cropping has finished, cut off the old leaves about 10cm (4in) above the crown to allow fresh leaves to develop. This isn’t necessary with autumn-fruiting plants – instead just remove the old leaves during the end-of-season clear-up

I’d also like to touch on using PVC pipe. Admittedly, PVC doesn’t make for the most attractive cage. Especially in my front yard. A wood frame would be far more attractive. Plant strawberries in mid-spring or in late summer/early autumn – no later than the first week of September in the northern Britain and the second week of September in southern regions. Planting in August or early September gives them longer to get established before fruiting, so they should produce a better crop. Adult vine weevils can be caught by hand and squashed. The best solution is to buy a biological control to kill the larvae. This is best applied in late summer and autumn. Starting from the bottom of one side, unroll netting and drape it up and over the PVC frame down to the ground on the other side.

Some gardeners prefer a continuous row in the second and third year, rather than spaced plants. The overall crop may be higher, but the quality of fruits is not as good. Whichever method you use, keep a clear gap between the rows to give you access for weeding and harvesting

And during pregnancy, because of hormone swings caused by the endocrine system, ladies are troubled by blemishes, hair growth, dry and sensitive skin etc. Some will even pop-up suddenly during pregnancy, really annoying.

Knowle Nets was started in 1965 at Knowle Farm Bridport Dorset - the home of net making since the 9th century. Firm the compost gently, then scatter the seeds thinly and evenly over the surface and lightly cover with sharp sand Replace the soil, ensuring that the base of the crown rests lightly on the surface, before firming in gently with your fingers. Planting at the correct depth is important – if the crown is planted too deeply it will rot, if it’s planted too shallowly the plant will dry out and die. Water well to settle the soil around the roots. If the leaf surfaces have a white, powdery look in summer, this is powdery mildew. It can be a problem in hot, dry weather. Keep the soil moist and remove any affected leaves promptly. Space out your plants to avoid over-crowding and to improve air flow. Remove weeds, as they can spread the fungus. The legs are 900mm in length and need to be pushed into the ground rougly 200mm which will give you a 700mm erected height on your cage.First, the strawberries on the outer edges of the plant will still be accessible to the birds, so you’ll still have some losses. Second, the plants gets caught up in the netting so when you go to harvest the berries, you will find yourself frustratingly fighting with the netting. When slugs and snails attempt to move onto the fabric they feel discomfort and either move off or stay still. Ensure the fabric is kept clear of debris and no leaves are overhanging past the fabric.
