About this deal

This activity was all about being independent. Could people fit everything they wanted to into their survival kits? How did they decide what was most important? Part of being independent is being able to make your own decisions. What did people to do make sure everything in their kit was suitable? Forgot to mention I also use circle type hooks they’ve proven themselves harder for the fish to jump the hook than standard long shank hooks. Hi Paul..great articles. Clear, easy to understand and follow. I learn something every time i read one!! easyazon_image align=”none” height=”107″ identifier=”B00IUQ24GE” locale=”UK” src=”https://ukpreppersguide.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/51VWd3Ufz2L.SL160.jpg” tag=”blogsurvivaltin-21″ width=”160″] The first aid pouch in the article is a small canvas pouch based on the pouches issued to deer cullers in New Zealand. They aren’t particularly well made; I’ve had several and the belt loop tends to pull away from the main body of the pouch. Also the internal seams are unfinished and quite messy.

N- Navigate yourself out of the situation if help doesn’t appear. Bear in mind that rescuers may be looking for you in your last known location. If Rescue tells you to stay where you are, you do just that! If space allows I also carry a small spinner or Toby with a treble hook just to add to the kits flexibility. Thanks for your comment and for the link regarding Cryptosporidium. I should update this article at some stage, with new photos too.To help you build this urban survival tin, I have put together a written guide with details, photos and product links for the different items inside the tin.

This will require some planning on your part as well as some decision-making to decide which kit will hold what items. Ultimately, just have a bit of fun and experiment so that you can create the perfect Altoids survival kit for you and your family.

As described in ‘ Essential Wilderness Equipment‘ a small first aid kit capable of dealing with cuts and other minor injuries is prudent. A small group of magnesium mini-matches and a steel striker. By shaving off a few pieces from the matches, you can use them as the base for starting a small fire. This ensures you can use a single match several times.

6 Survival Basics

This is where the Altoids survival tin can fall a bit short because the tin itself is simply not large enough to be able to house a true survival knife. That being said, there are still a wide number of other tasks that demand a sharp edge for which the smaller knives and blades that an Altoids tin could house are appropriate. Snares are indiscriminate and used incorrectly can cause great suffering to an animal. They should not be toyed with. In experienced hands snares are very effective and, in a survival situation, they can provide you with valuable fat and protein. This is nutrition that can be impossible to obtain from foraging for plant foods and fungi, particularly during winter and spring. Moreover, snares work for you while you do other things. Some brass snare wire, or snares already made up for the most likely small game, are a sensible and realistic addition to a survival kit. Snaring is illegal in many jurisdictions and requires a licence in others. I also carry three weed hooks for both fresh and salt water. If your kit is limited and loosing even some of your line and hooks is disastrous, then this I find makes sense. Fish tend to like cover and being able to fish for them in weed without fouling can really make a difference. You’ll need enough small tins for everyone to have one – about 10cm square is about the right size. People could bring their own from home if they have something they’re happy to repurpose. Otherwise, you should be able to find them fairly cheaply online (or as sweet tins in a shop). This urban survival tin was designed for surviving three different scenarios that can take place in an urban environment:

Yep Dip Flat and the Nelson Lakes area is very good country with a good variety of terrain types from Alpine to Lowland forest.. The RNZAF still have a training facilty at Dip Flat today… From a survival standpoint insect repellant may seem like a luxury at first glance. Biting insects can make life a misery though. They can cause so much distraction that you don’t pay attention to dangers or that you injure yourself, particularly if you’re using cutting tools. Medical Kit

Yes, I remember you well. You certainly added some value to the discussions around cell biology and immunology. A Dressing Pad and Surgical Tape are provided to deal with reasonably large wounds, not like plasters that can only cover small cuts.
