Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. By Jonas Jonasson Book Review: Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. By Jonas Jonasson

If you don’t know how to plot revenge in a good way, just let literature inspire you. Here are my best tips on how you can learn to become a worse person. To summarise, this book is farcical in EVERY sense of the word. And unless you know and have read Jónasson’s work before, perhaps give it a miss. A glorious romp which confirms Jonas Jonasson’s status as the most brilliant comic novelist alive’ Daily MirrorMuch of it is rather far fetched, but you'll expect that if you've read the '100 Year Old Man...' books. Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. By Jonas Jonasson (translated by Rachel Willson-Broyles) is a thought-provoking comedy from this Swedish author. Mr. Jonasson is a native Swede who worked as a journalist and owned his own media company. PDF / EPUB File Name: Sweet_Sweet_Revenge_Ltd__-_Jonas_Jonasson.pdf, Sweet_Sweet_Revenge_Ltd__-_Jonas_Jonasson.epub At best 2.5 stars in this pointless yarn that reads like an amateur improv skit. The crazy plot is let down by it's author who decides to just jump from one subplot to other without investing in characters.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Then he added man. Maybe he wouldn’t have if he’d known what was coming. Anyway, Adam and Eve messed up, God became furious and launched Project Fall of Man. In doing so he also created revenge as a concept. When my father said, “The world is crap, it makes you want to cry.” I said to myself, “It doesn’t help crying. It doesn’t help laughing either, but it’s more fun.” Cattle (cows and goats), clubs (the fighting kind) and jam. Three items which often appear in this book :-P Ich bereue es wirklich, dieses konfuse, holprige, ethisch und moralisch durchaus kontrovers zu sehende Machwerk wirklich bis zum Schluss gelesen zu haben....

I love Jonas Jonasson’s books, and The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared remains one of my all-time favourite books. When I heard we were getting a new Jonasson book, I was beyond excited and more than ready for another wild ride filled with his trademark witty humour, sharp social commentary and surreal situations. Unfortunately, Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd didn’t quite deliver for me. Furthermore, having very recently read the second book of the 100 years old man, the introduction of Maasai, Kenya etc didn't have the effect it would had if I haven't read said book. On the other hand, I liked the inspiration of the author to connect his story with the history of art, painting, art auctions, Irma Stern and so on. I thought this book was uproariously funny and enjoyed its laugh-out-loud moments. However, it was longer than it needed to be. An added bonus was learning about some leading artists that were unknown to me. The comedy connects some diverse characters in a surprising way. The story is set mainly in Sweden. I have always enjoyed books by Jonas Jonasson, so I was excited about reading this new work of his. Much like his other books, Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd is quirky but with a heart. A bunch of lovable, bumbling characters, with seemingly nothing in common, come together for a grand story.

In my youth, I was fascinated by the Swedish writer PC Jersild’s novel A Living Soul, in which the protagonist is in fact a free-floating brain inside an aquarium standing in a laboratory. The brain falls in love with its caregiver, which doesn’t work out brilliantly. When I, 37 years later, read Ian McEwan, I was reminded of A Living Soul . In Nutshell, the protagonist is an unborn foetus inside its mother’s womb. It’s bleak, funny, murderous – and Hamlet-inspired. Overall, this was an entertaining read despite its issues, and my disappointment in it might have stemmed more from my high expectations than anything else. A comedy of errors that missed the mark for me, but still good enough to pass a few hours. To me, the best parts were by far the dialogues. My favourite ones between Ole and Hugo. Those were the bits where I laughed the most. And the scene between Victor and the American whose name I already forgot. And the fact that there are different parts in the Bible which can be interpreted and used as it fits the situation. Hah! Jonas Jonasson certainly seem to take pleasure in writing farces, comedy of errors that happen to somehow work out. Kevin and Jenny get their revenge on the cynical, opportunist Victor – who has no redeeming character at all. I enjoyed the fact that the young couple was assisted by the owner of Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd. A man who, like Victor, has little redeeming qualities except that his not a fascist. As a student of literature, I’d learnt many many years ago about the “willing suspension of disbelief” that enables appreciation and enjoyment of art, that is so often, a subjective expression.
