Talisker is the oldest distillery on the Isle of Skye and for many years was the only one. Looking out over Loch Harport, the distillery was founded in 1830 by the MacAskill brothers and has been producing whisky for almost the entirety of the past two centuries. Now owned by Diageo, the distillery is able to rely on the resources such a corporate conglomerate is able to provide, like access to a host of casks to use in finishing. The Distillers Edition series is a program run by Diageo where standard offerings of a distillery are then further aged in ex-sherry or ex-wine casks. The Talisker Distillers Edition is a Talisker 10 year aged a further 12 months in ex-amoroso sherry casks. Amoroso is a blend out of Jerez, Spain where bodega workers would add a touch of Pedro Ximenez sherry to their bottles of Oloroso sherry, to make it more loveable, or “amoroso,” for their wives. This is similar to a cream sherry. To celebrate the Talisker distillery’s 175th anniversary in 2005, a no age statement commemorative single malt bottling was released. Two years later in 2007, Talisker 18 year old won ‘Best Single Malt In The World 2007’ at the World Whiskies Awards. Since 2008, the Talisker range has vastly expanded with a no age statement quartet and even a 40 year old expression. Talisker is now one of Diageo’s most distinguished single malt brands.

A typical Talisker! Mild and maritime, fruity and earthy tart, the well-known "Chili-Catch" gives this DE a hot and piquant note. Tastes and pleases! Not to be confused with the far more expensive Diageo Special Edition Releases, Diageo’s Distillers Edition whiskies are more accessible (read: affordable) but also released on a (mostly) annual basis. While normally we see these a bit randomly, this year we were fortunate to receive the full collection of 2021 Distillers Editions, six whiskies in total from some of the biggest names in Scotch — each of which was sent with a companion candle created with the respective whisky. With Water: A few drops of water dampen the peat, and release a fog of vanilla. I’d skip the water. You can spend years waiting for a new release in Talisker's core range then two come along at once! Hot on the heels of Talisker Storm in early 2013 comes Talisker's Port Ruighe, pronounced 'Port Ree'.

The Distiller’s Edition from Talisker features additional maturation in ex-oloroso sherry casks. Though each annual limited release does not feature a overt age statement, the distillation and bottling years are clearly presented on the label. The Distiller’s Edition is bottled at the same 45.8% ABV (91.6 proof) as Talisker 10 Year. In mixed company, the dram can be overpowered by more heavily peated single malts such as Laphroaig or Lagavulin. It would be a mistake to view the release as a lesser version of an Islay malt, however. Talisker has a unique identity which sets it apart as much as being the only distillery on Skye does. The price for a bottle is very reasonable, and paired with its quality, makes this release a must-have for my own collection.
