I'd happily recommend this book to crime readers young and old, it's an undoubtedly 5 star read for me! Tall Oaks is an idyllic small town, until the disappearance of a young child throws the tight-knit community into crisis.This was Whitaker’s debut novel, and my gosh can this man write his characters! There was such an incredible and diverse selection of characters in this novel. These were some of the most interesting people I’ve read about in a long time! They’ll make you laugh and they’ll make you cry. Not one of their journeys through the book bored me, which is quite a feat considering there is a reasonably large number of them! It’s worth noting that is definitely a character-driven novel, so if you’re someone who prefers plot-driven books, this definitely won’t be for you! Oaks produce one of the hardest and most durable timbers on the planet. However, it takes up to 150 years before an oak is ready to use in construction. It has been a prized hardwood timber for thousands of years and is still used for flooring, wine barrels and firewood. Tall Oaks" written by Chris Whitaker is a very character driven novel that is exceedingly well written with some fantastic multi layered plot lines. Every character is so unique and has their own little story or secret that they are trying to hide which makes each individual person and their lives an addictive story in itself. I particularly liked Manny - even with his foul mouth - he's a great character that you can't help but take to, introducing humour into this quite at times upsetting storyline. I could easily imagine Manny having his own book and storyline to himself. The child abduction starts off the mystery element of this novel and the reader gains a deep insight into its effect on this small community, how it affects the mother and the policeman obsessed with the case. But this is far more than another missing child procedural, as the author allows us to glimpse into the obscure lives and relationships of some other townsfolk, too. Several fascinating plot strands with plenty of drama and secrets. The characters were truly memorable.

Chris Whitaker paints observant and kind portrayals of these people. The POV changes frequently so you need to pay attention.
