Further to the above, I’ve now finished reading the bits that held interest for me, chiefly the Egypt connection which all told, covers about three or four chapters and has in my option, been better dealt with by other books on the subject. In 1906, his interest piqued by the excavations of the American treasure hunter Theodore Davis, Carnarvon obtained a small excavating concession near the Valley of the Kings where, the authorities thought, “he could do no harm”. Within 24 hours he had found a burial pit. “This gave rise to much excitement in the Antiquities Department which soon simmered down when the pit was found to be unfinished,” wrote Carnarvon. “Beyond finding a large, mummified cat in its case which now graces the Cairo Museum, nothing whatsoever rewarded my strenuous and very dusty endeavours.” The Earl’s famous motor car accident in Germany is now admitted as being in 1909, the subject of others research for a decade. However, the large cast of supporting characters sometimes threaten to upstage the earl in his own biography. His long-suffering wife Almina, the illegitimate daughter of Alfred Rothschild and the subject of a previous book by Lady Carnarvon, comes across as a strong and tolerant figure, holding the fort while her husband boards his steam yacht and sails off for adventures in foreign parts. His half-brother Aubrey Herbert, the model for Sandy Arbuthnot in John Buchan’s Richard Hannay novels, turns out to have been every bit as dashing as his fictional alter-ego, travelling through the Near East on mysterious diplomatic missions and being offered the throne of Albania – not once, but twice. Recently restored by the Earl & Countess of Carnarvon, London Lodge, built in 1793, and Grotto Lodge, built 1865, are available to hire for stays through 2023 and 2024. Carnarvon’s life makes a good story, with plenty of Downton-esque period details – sometimes rather too many, in fact. And every now and then, the countess lets her imagination run wild, as when she assures us that Carnarvon and Tutankhamun had much in common: “both were dashing men born into a gilded lifestyle”; both suffered from poor health. And the mosquito bite which led to Carnarvon’s death from septicaemia was on his left cheek, while Tutankhamun’s famous golden mask of hammered gold was thinner in one place – on the left cheek.
