The Daughters of Foxcote Manor is a fascinating mystery/family drama about a foundling, the family who takes her in, and the nanny who knows all of their secrets. What I liked best about the entire book was the character development of Antonia, who went from a downcast, put-upon, childless wife, to an upbeat, courageous, woman with a purpose! Normally I resist the classic ranting, agenda-filled, feminist cause that is all over books these days, but here . the change takes place in a believable, organic way that is incrementally progressive without being in-your-face aggressive! I really, really loved how her metamorphosis was so perceptively achieved. Well done, Beatrice Colin! The sections about the people of Lancaster, Ohio are generally good and at their best are reminiscent of David Simon's excellent book The Corner. However, too many people with not enough depth made the local aspect of the book a distraction from the better conceived macro viewpoint.

Dream House: An Intimate Portrait of the Philip Johnson Glass House by Adele Tutter, 2016, University of Virginia Press In 1947, Forbes magazine declared Lancaster, Ohio the epitome of the all-American town. Today it is damaged, discouraged, and fighting for its future. In Glass House , journalist Brian Alexander uses the story of one town to show how seeds sown 35 years ago have sprouted to give us Trumpism, inequality, and an eroding national cohesion. If you've ever wondered where the current state of raging income inequality in America came from, this book is a good place to start. In the case of the Glass House, the stylistic approach is perfectly clear. Mies van der Rohe and I had discussed how you could build a glass house and each of us built one. Mies’ was, of course, primary and mine was an adoption from the master, although it’s quite a different approach. In my case, there were a lot of historical influences at work. The Glass House stylistically is a mixture of Mies van der Rohe, Malevich, the Parthenon, the English garden, the whole Romantic Movement, the asymmetry of the 19th century. In other words, all these things are mixed up in it but basically it is the last of the modern, in the sense of the historic way we treat modern architecture today, the simple cube. And that’s when the stories get interwoven into each other, with entanglements and twists you wouldn’t ever expect. Goldberger, Paul (January 27, 2005). "Philip Johnson, Architecture's Restless Intellect, Dies at 98". The New York Times. ISSN 0362-4331 . Retrieved January 15, 2023.

George was a massive asshole who cheated on his wife and then had the audacity to ask her to go visit that woman and his possible illegitimate child. During this same visit to Scotland, he sent her to sell his family estate out from under his sister and her husband. Not to even mention that all of his letters/telegrams are all basically just "Send me more money." The Glass House has been "universally viewed as having been derived from" the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe according to Alice T. Friedman, though the Farnsworth House was not completed until 1951, two years after the Glass House. Johnson curated an exhibit of Mies van der Rohe work at the Museum of Modern Art in 1947, featuring a model of the glass Farnsworth House. [4] It was an important and influential project for Johnson and for modern architecture. The building is an example of minimal structure, geometry, proportion, and the effects of transparency and reflection. The estate includes other buildings designed by Johnson that span his career. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997. It is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is open to the public for guided tours, which begin at a visitors center at 199 Elm Street in New Canaan. The ending is a little sappy and got me a little teary-eyed. Overall, this was both a dark and heartwarming read. This was my first book by Eve Chase and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future. Pitt's Plan B inks deal with Paramount". M & C News, Jun 23, 2005. Archived from the original on December 5, 2008.This was a book about friendship, secrets, relationships and exotic plants. The setting was Scotland and India. I loved the exotic plants information in the book. I appreciated the struggles and the moral of the destructive power of secrets kept and not shared. Part Three, titled "Welch", covers approximately a seven-year period and documents Jeannette and her siblings' shifting perspectives on life with their parents from being one of adventure and whimsy to abuse and brokenness. While in Welch, the Walls children face bullying, sexual abuse, and hunger. Ultimately, Lori and Jeannette hatch a plan for Lori to move to New York City, with Jeannette following shortly thereafter. Eventually, Lori moves, and Jeannette joins her shortly before finishing high school. In this one, we have the very tall nanny, Big Rita, who is caring for children in a troubled family, first in London and then at the country house. The Harringtons have two children and a third is about to be born. Rita is loving taking the children to London museums and field trips to the Thames, but two tragedies force the family to relocate to the country house, Foxcote Manor. The children -- Hera and Teddy – love tramping around in the forest around Foxcote, but Rita worries something terrible will happen to them out there, and she’s not too fond of forests herself. She does love terrariums however! I have pretty much enjoyed the book and the journey it took beyond the coast of Scotland and the mountains of India. Applaud to Collin’s delicate use of language, and rarely I have read a book with such a description of places, nature, and past so adroit, mesmerizing, and eloquent that it almost kept me from returning to the present. I do wish that the overall story and rhythm of events had been more developed. I ended the book with a feeling that not enough had really happened to warrant its ending events. I had a yearning for something just a bit more—be that either in character development or more conflict, I’m not sure.
