Description

What can people at the end of their lives teach us about living well today? In this heart-warming memoir of wisdom, redemption and even joy, Hadley Vlahos beautifully shares life lessons and stories from being a palliative care nurse, and how end-of-life patients informed her sense of purpose. Un Libro al que llegue porque quería ver la película de la cual me enteré primero y tengo que decir que me gustó mucho. Now a major Nexflix film. A heartbreaking story from Marc Klein perfect for fans of If I Stay and Five Feet Apart. THE IN BETWEEN —written by Marc Klein (Little Brown), a heartfelt story follows two seventeen-year-old teens. Tessa and her first love, Skylar. Until all comes to a tragic end that might lead her into the afterlife, starring Joey King (The Kissing Booth) and Kyle Allen (The Map of Tiny Perfect Things). Katie refers to the library as “a safe space for stillness / and silence” (Daydreams). Why is it important to have a place that gives you a sense of safety and acceptance? What is your safe space?

THE IN-BETWEEN is an enjoyable middle grade mystery-fantasy combo with relatable characters and intriguing twists! ★In the end, I have learned that we cannot shun our deepest selves. Our ghosts make us who we are and who we hope to be. And like the bittersweet memories of first love, we carry these hauntings inside us, tethered irrevocably to our hearts...."

The In Between by Marc Klein | Goodreads

Pros: Original premise. Ambiguous and poignant story, with a surprising early twist and a subsequent, creepy crescendo. This heartbreaking story—perfect for fans of If I Stay and Five Feet Apart—follows a girl swept up in the magic of her first love, until it all comes to a tragic end that might lead her into the afterlife itself. Soon to be a motion picture on Paramount+ starring Joey King! Examine the section titled “Again.” What does the poem that Katie writes reveal about her feelings about staying in the hotel? Why do you think she feels like she needs to hide her feelings from her family? Madeline kisses me on the lips. Not like a boy. Closer. We are meant to be forever. After she met Madeline and tried to deal with the fact that her father is unable to care for her, or himself, suddenly things change, and it's not her mother who had died in the crash, but rather her father. She was suffering from head trauma. I had a hard time believing that this was "real" life because I couldn't tell what was real and wasn't anymore, or ever really. When tragedy strikes, Tessa wakes up alone in a hospital room with no memory of how she got there. And then she learns the horrifying news: Skylar is dead.

Overall this book feels unique and thought-provoking and is an uncomfortable visit into the mind of a very troubled and unhappy teenager. It won’t make you feel good but it will make you think and will challenge you to work out what you believe. I love that there is no cookie-cutter answer to what is going on, instead the book leaves you to make up your own mind.

Describing her family’s many moves, Katie says that everything “has its place, / its compartment, / books and / pictures and / feelings, too” (Things Fall Apart). Then she observes that “with each move, there are fewer boxes to carry” (Things Fall Apart). What does it mean to put your feelings in compartments? Why would there be less to carry with each move? So when Cooper learns of an unsolved mystery his sister has discovered online, he welcomes the distraction. It’s the tale of a deadly train crash that occurred a hundred years ago in which one young boy among the dead was never identified. The only distinguishing mark on him was a strange insignia on his suit coat, a symbol no one had seen before or since. Jess is fascinated by the mystery of the unknown child—because she’s seen the insignia. And, she tells Cooper, he has too. The writing is wonderfully poetic and creates a terrific atmosphere. THE IN-BETWEEN is well suited to more elaborate prose, reflecting the chaos in Ellie's head and the confusing atmosphere. It's a nice atmosphere, one that portends bad things coming, but also offers hope for Ellie.
