Description

The Initiate was followed by two sequels, The Initiate in the New World and The Initiate in the Dark Cycle. The first sequel discusses the adventures of the author and Justin Haig in the United States, and the second discusses the experiences of the pair upon their return to England; both retain the format of an anthology of short anecdotes, although they more closely approach the form of instructive lectures than do those of the first book. The sequels also reference and sometimes critique occult organizations and persons, such as the Theosophical Society, Jiddu Krishnamurti, and Helena Blavatsky. Heraclitus, a Greek philosopher of the 5th century B.C., posits a very similar question in the Fragments attributed to him: The Initiate: Some Impressions of A Great Soul is a combined anthology and parable dealing with the occult, written by the British composer Cyril Scott in the early 1900s. It was first published (anonymously) in 1920. Henry More, An Antidote against Atheism Divine Providence would only initiate and enter mankind into the useful knowledge of her, leaving the rest to employ our industry.

INITIATE definition and meaning | Collins English Dictionary

Having seen what the Druid initiate was required to know, and how long it took him to gain this knowledge, it must be clear what initiation really is: instruction in the occult mysteries by a genuine Master. It is a process lasting many years during which the candidate gradually acquires all-knowledge and all-wisdom, insofar as this is possible on earth. There will then be no more problems of a physical, spiritual or philosophical nature which he cannot solve, and he will be in every way fully master of his fate and circumstances. That is initiation and there are no short-cuts to it. Nor can initiation be conferred from one to another, as you may have read or been taught, for it is primarily a matter of personal growth and inner transformation, or we might even say transmutation, which no outside agency, be it the greatest Adept who ever lived, can make. Only the initiate himself can bring this about through his own efforts.

The expression, master-builder, used only once in the whole Bible, and by Paul, may be considered as the closest any initiate has come to openly revealing his status. When Paul entitles himself a "master-builder," he is using a word pre-eminently Masonic, Kabbalistic and occult which no other apostle uses. He thus declares himself an Adept, having the right (laid the foundation) to initiate others. Strong activation, for example, means that you are more likely to start pursuing a goal. Persistence and intensity will determine if you keep working toward that goal and how much effort you devote to reaching it. Tips for Improving Your Motivation The second part of the book is a highly symbolic and traditional parable in which an assortment of occult principles and virtues are illustrated. This fictional portion of the book tells the story of Antonius, a wealthy and jaded individual who decides to set aside his life of materialistic pleasures and seek greater occult truths on a journey into the mountains to meet the members of a spiritual Brotherhood, accompanied by a female companion named Cynara.

We know almost nothing of their life together and not wishing to speculate, must pass over this time in the philosopher's life and conclude this afterword. But before we do so, we cannot resist quoting one anecdote attributed to Pythagoras' wife which should appeal to all our regular readers. One day Theano was asked what length of time should elapse before a woman was pure again after intercourse with a man. The Sage's wife replied: "If it is with her husband, she is pure all the time; if with another man, she is never pure." Theon of Smyrna, an initiate of the Eleusinian Mysteries who flourished in the first century A.D., divides the Mysteries into five parts in his book Mathematica: The main reason for this was the terrible persecution of the Samian Sage which cost him and his pupils their lives. Some were crushed to death beneath the ruins of their burning schools, others died of starvation. The Master's memory and teaching were only perpetuated by the few survivors who were able to escape into Greece. Pythagoras, like the British Druids, never committed his esoteric teachings to writing, but communicated them orally in the form of symbols and secret characters. The fragmentary remains of his system and teachings have come down to us in the Golden Verses, the commentary of Hierocles, the fragments of Philolaus and in the Timaeus of Plato, which contains the cosmogony of Pythagoras. initiate ( third-person singular simple present initiates, present participle initiating, simple past and past participle initiated) According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master-builder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon.
