About this deal

Plot-wise, this was excellent: a cast of characters who were all distinct and easy to remember, and all suspicious enough to warrant an imaginary question mark over their heads; the murderer could have been any of them. I really loved Katy Brent's first book, which I still think is the best in the recently mushrooming "female vigilante story with humour" genre, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read her latest book. And I have to say Brent has followed up an excellent debut novel with an equally good follow up in this, her second book. Fast-paced with the story unfolding at lightning speed, Molly’s world is completely thrown upside down after she discovers her friend’s body. This book is a story about manipulation, the influence of the wealthy, the power of social media and how in the case of Molly, a ten second video going viral has devastating consequences for those involved. I’ve woken up with the hangover from hell, a stranger in my bed, and I’ve gone viral for the worst reasons. But I can’t remember a thing…

The Murder After the Night Before | Katy Brent

Molly Monroe wakes up the morning after her work Christmas party with the hangover to end all hangovers. Her head is pounding, her memory is a blank, and there is a strange man in her bed. And unfortunately, that's just the beginning. Because whatever happened the night before, Molly is now trending on social media and her best friend is dead. Its the night of the office party for a girls magazine. Molly Monroe is out to celebrate. However, she over indulges and awakes the next morning with no recollection of the night before and with a stranger in her bed. Dragging herself to work she discovers she is an internet sensation. Manly due to an X-rated video that has hit the media. She is sent home and just wants to talk to her flatmate Posey. However, Posey is missing and she is soon to be discovered dead. Being a man I really shouldn't like this book. Well I didn't like it. I loved it! Oh I just couldn't stop reading this.’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a brilliant, funny, heartbreaking story about friendship, grief, lies, and what women face as they navigate an enduringly misogynistic world. Molly is a likeable MC and you do feel for her, especially wrt her feelings over losing her mother early, and her best friend under these circumstances. This book is an easy read dealing with some difficult issues. There are just so many good things I could say about this book. I absolutely tore (pun intended) through this read. Everyone needs to go read it.’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Katy's writing is witty and relatable, it's a book that most young women can identify with. We've all had a bit too much to drink on a night out and regretted our actions but perhaps not to the same length that Molly does. Funny, touching, horrifying and surprising almost in equal measure with a brilliantly believable heroine... loved this book’ Catherine Cooper, author of The Chalet

The Murder After the Night Before – HarperCollins Publishers UK

I found the humour to be spot on and liked the commentary on slut shaming. However, things started to get a little too unbelievable for me at points, which was a real shame. Once again this book contains some highly entertaining dark and acerbic humour as well as highlighting some very well observed social issues as the narrative progresses. However, those elements are merely very welcome bonuses in this gripping thriller. The story gets off to an intriguing and novel start when central character, Molly, wakes up with the mother of all hangovers following her work Christmas party. But life is about to take an even more unpleasant and discombobulating turn for Molly when she finds out that an explicit video of her has gone viral! What a ride! Unflinchingly realistic and raw but somehow also brilliantly funny at times, Brent's novel is a must-read’ Jesse Sutanto, author of Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
