Created in a small town in the highlands of Jalisco, our founder Dwayne Johnson worked with a Mexican family-owned distillery to build a unique home on the grounds solely for Teremana - Destilería Teremana de Agave. Here they craft Teremana with a love for great tequila made the right way, in small batches, by hand. While it may not be the smoothest sipper and has a bit of a boozy and peppery taste, it can make a Margarita with a touch of oak flavor. It’s unusual for a Reposado aged only for two months to have such a dominant vanilla taste, which points towards the use of fake flavorings. My opinion: It is worth noting that the vanilla flavor is more prominent than expected from an Añejo aged for just one year, but this should not be a deal-breaker.

Developed in association with Ken Austin and Jenna Fagnan from Tequila Avión fame, Teremana follows the Polynesian and Mexican ethos of respect for the earth and its people. The finish is moderate in length and moderately warm, but the strong aftertaste of artificial vanilla is overpowering. Dwayne Johnson: “We had no idea how this was going to shake out. We launched in the beginning of the pandemic. And with consumer behavior then…to try and deliver something new at that time when things were so uncertain—everyone only wanted what they were familiar with, and I understood that. But instead of shelving the product and putting it on hold, we felt like maybe there was a shot here, because we’re all going through this together.”

We wanted to create a brand and deliver it to people in the hope that people would like it. But I really wanted to take my time showing it my audience. Presenting a quality liquid done the old fashioned way. And you hear that in marketing all the time. But we took it one step further and actually showed what old school means to us: fully matured agave, slower cooking, lowering the temperature. And we saw a white space in the market to come in with a quality liquid at an accessible price point. Teremana composts the agave fibers that are leftover from the shredding process, then uses the compost as organic fertilizer for the agave fields. The distillery also cleans its leftover production water using a state-of-the-art filtration system so the water can be reused elsewhere on the property.
