This book follows Emma, a single mother to a six year old daughter, who is trying to navigate her life two years after her beloved husband was killed in a car crash. She is also a dedicated teacher at her daughter, Claire’s, school. The book starts with Emma and Claire on a school trip at a pumpkin patch with the whole class. The day starts off good, but ends in disaster when Emma’s daughter goes missing, and is suspected to have been kidnapped. Emma is sure Claire wouldn’t have left with a stranger and it must have been someone she knew, so Emma is questioning everyone and everything and has no idea who she can trust. The day takes a turn when one child goes missing, and as a the reader, you are immediately put in panic mode. Unfortunately, that is only the start of the horrible day to come. Miranda Smith writes psychological suspense. She is drawn to stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations, complicated women, and dark impulses. This novel was incredible, and not just in terms of suspense (where it was INSANE). But there's so much to be said in here about grief and the domino effect loss can create. Miranda Smith writes psychological and domestic suspense. She is drawn to stories about ordinary people in extraordinary situations. Before completing her first novel, she worked as a newspaper staff writer and a secondary English teacher. She lives in East Tennessee with her husband and three young children.

Names, characters, businesses, organizations, places and events other than those clearly” What a ride! This was everything I like about thrillers. Fast paced, hard to put down and emotional. The main character Emma is very likable and you feel all the emotions she’s experiencing with the loss of her husband and missing child. I kept guessing throughout the whole book who the kidnapper could be and why. But then when you think you have this all figured it out…boom comes the twist. Highly recommend it!YES!… Entirely captivating, the plot twists at the end had me on the edge of my seat… Mind blown. Do yourselves a favor, READ IT!”Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We humans are drawn to tragedy in the same way we’re mesmerized by fire: its power, its unpredictability, its warmth.”

Some Days Are Dark is a gripping, suspenseful story centered around bad choices and the possibility of second chances. This story will draw you in and hold your attention to the end. The story comes with a great flow, and the end will make your jaws drop. There are also numerous twists and turns that will keep you guessing. If you are a Gone Girl fan, you will love this book. Together with her work colleagues and her daughter, Claire who also attends the school, it’s a day of fun and adventure. Fantastic... I found very hard to stop reading. All the characters were excellent, brilliant storytelling all the way... I cannot speak highly enough about this book, definitely a must-read... A thoroughly 5+ stars from me." Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I felt pretty entertained for the majority of this book; I needed a bit more action, though. I would’ve definitely enjoyed more chapters devoted to the kidnapper and his madness. The story started a little slow, but I think those extra chapters were necessary to tell the story. In addition, the last book I read had a young character, and I could not have been annoyed more by that kid’s behavior. Miranda Smith is fortunately able to write a child character without making them whiney or bratty, and that was the part of the book that made me happy.

Not only is it clear that Emma was kidnapped, Claire and the police wonder if it is someone from Claire’s past who has taken Emma. As this heartbreaking story is being told, Claire realizes how alone she and Emma are, especially after losing her husband several years ago in a tragic accident. Make no mistake I really liked this book. It had a few red herrings, had me guessing, there were twists and turns, and I was here for it. At 60ish percent I had formed a pretty solid theory. At 70 percent it was destroyed. I was salty, excited, irritated, and ready for this to play out. We call the police and frantically scour the fields and playgrounds, my heart breaking as I cry out Claire’s name. And then a detective shows me a my daughter, skipping away from the farm, holding hands with an adult in a bulky coat, their cap pulled down low.

Thank you very much to NetGalley and Bookouture for this entertaining ARC! All opinions are my own.Emma always looks forward to the annual kindergarten field trip to the local pumpkin patch, and this year is extra special because her daughter Claire is amongst her students. The teachers are frantic when a child gets lost, only to be discovered in the center of the corn maze. But before the relief of finding her can set in, Emma realizes that another child has gone missing – her daughter Claire. Had me absolutely HOOKED from the start!… Took me on a wild ride… One of the best books of 2023!” Goodreads reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This set my anxiety through the roof, I think it is every parent’s worst nightmare that their child disappears on a school trip. I was hooked because I was hoping and praying that Claire would be found safe and well, and I wanted to know who would do such an awful thing. What sets The School Trip apart from other thrillers is the author’s focus on the theme of motherhood. The bond between a mother and child is strong, and this book portrays it beautifully. It’s not just about finding the missing child but also about a mother’s resilience and her ability to face her fears. The author also brings themes of grief and guilt into the story, adding depth to the characters.
