Although they are not dwelled upon, sensitive children may find that sad. The art is very faithful to the original though this book has far more words than the original (I would have liked to see fewer words, actually, and to let the art speak more). Step 1 Readers feature big type and easy words for children who know the alphabet and are eager to begin reading. Rhyme and rhythmic text paired with picture clues help children decode the story. Feeling lonely after moving to a new location and losing his dog to old age, Billy stumbles on a loose floorboard and discovers a box of mementos from another boy who lived in this same room years ago. Billy uses items from the box to build a snowman just like the one in the photo, and with leftover snow he forms a snowdog.
