First, there is a difficulty in connecting Ezekiel’s “gate facing east” with the Eastern Gate of the Old City of Jerusalem. Ezekiel specifically says the gate he saw is “the outer gate of the sanctuary” (Ezekiel 44:1); that is, it’s a gate of the temple court, not a gate of the city. Schwaller de Lubicz also writes that man is comprised of three main beings: the sexual being, the corporeal being, and the spiritual being. Also outside the pylon is a well-preserved obelisk. The Tabernacle and the Temple

Before entering the temple, take note of the sphinx-lined walkway outside the entrance. The face on the sphinxes is that of Amenhotep III. In contrast to the ram-headed sphinxes outside Karnak, these human-headed sculptures are more fitting for the ‘Temple of Man.’ when going up for the purposes of religion, they would be more inclined to give alms than at other times; and especially was this true of the Pharisees, who were particularly desirous of publicity in bestowing charity. It is recorded by Martial (i. 112) that the custom prevailed among the Romans of placing the poor by the gates of the temples; and the custom was also observed a long time in the Christian churches.
