About this deal

Book Twenty One of the hilarious, bestselling Tom Gates series, written by the brilliantly talented Liz Pichon! I'm hoping that I can steer some of my young library patrons to this series. I thought the writing was just as good as Wimpy Kid, and I think the overall story is much better. As I said, I also don't see the stereotypes in this first book like I did in Wimpy Kid. Only time will tell if Tom stays the course, or if he walks down the Wimpy Kid road to cruelty.

Did we miss something on diversity?

Claire on Facebook revealed that her 9-year-old is 'flying through' the World of Normbooks by Jonathan Meres and illustratorDonough O'Malley, and they are 'very popular' at @HazeleyLibrary (where The Private Blog of Joe Cowley by Ben Davis is also going down well). The Tom Gates series by Liz Pichon is a popular collection of books aimed at children aged 9-14. The series follows the misadventures of Tom Gates,... Tom has forgotten to bring his baby photo into school, his shoes are making embarrassingly rude noises, and, as he rushes to the classroom, he bumps into the snuffling Amber who sneezes all over him. What else can go wrong? I love Lucy Coats' Beasts of Olympus series - these are little illustrated chapter books based on Greek mythology. Each book tells many shorter tales, and they all weave together. No childhood should be without access to mythology; it is both wonderfully entertaining and hugely important to world culture. David Roberts' illustrations bring to life the many extraordinary gods and monsters, from centaurs and winged horses, to serpent-headed Gorgons and a pantheon of goddesses, gods and demi-gods.
