On a small scale, the body has its own system to correct damaged DNA through a process called nucleotide excision repair. In this type of repair, the damaged portion of DNA is cut out of the strand by an enzyme called a nuclease. Then, the space left behind is filled with the correct bases to fit the complimentary DNA strand. DNA polymerase and DNA ligase are two of the enzymes involved in filling the strand.
