U njega se dodaje čist alkohol, šećerni sirup i specijalno selektovane osušene biljke samlevene u prah. U vermut se tradicijalno dodaje lekovito bilje i to: pelin (otud i ime), zova, menta i hajdučka trava, ali i začinsko bilje kao što su: vanila, cimet, muskatni orah, ruzmarin i kantarion.
