About this deal

A groundbreaking memoir about being a trans teen, in the vein of FUN HOME and FLAMER... and at the same time entirely its own. I liked the accurate depiction of depression that Davene’s story showed. Especially that she felt like her friend didn’t understand at all and then later we see that she does understand better than we thought.

I liked getting to see every character's personality and style through the slice-of-life style, but would've definitely loved to know more about them as I felt that some things just got put aside to focus on various things. The best graphic novels have illustrations as strong as their text and Wash Day Diaries is no exception. The depictions of hair care rituals were particularly hypnotic and drew a clear line from the meditative quality of self care rituals to the meditative nature of the illustrations. I loved how each character had their own color palette that followed them through all the chapters. With a clear visual vocabulary for each character set, there was an engaging interplay between and within panels by keeping to that character-based color palette. Basically, yay so pretty!

Wash Day Diaries is a beautiful book. It's visually stunning, dynamic, and evocative, and a glowing tribute to ride-or-die female friendship. This is something special, and I hope to see much more from these characters! I will be recommending to friends and library patrons far and wide. From writer Jamila Rowser and artist Robyn Smith comes a captivating graphic novel love letter to the beauty and endur... I thoroughly loved this piece. It brought warm fuzzy home feelings. The relationships were lovable and relatable. My own friend group could of been the Guinea Pigs for this work and I think that was what made me fall in live. Read more When I went to college in New York, which is where my family was from, I discovered the beauty and the pain of Dominican salons. I stopped perming my hair because I was like, oh, they could just go and burn it, blow it straight. So I kind of stopped doing perms because of that. Not really deliberately, like I want to embrace my natural hair, but I was just like, oh, I don’t need a perm for straight hair.

For sure. And both of those stories weave in so well with their daily lives. For both of you, how have your sisterhoods enriched your lives? Thanks to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for this free e-ARC. The following is my voluntary and unbiased review. The second novel about a preacher's daughter in small-town Texas and her journey toward loving herself and her body.

From the creator of Yes, I'm Hot In This, this cheeky, hilarious, and honest graphic novel asks the question everyone has to figure out for themselves: Who are you?The Lost Loiners – Anna Readman Lends an Unlikely Humanity to the Monstrous in Her Troll Illustration Zine And of course, this book wouldn't be what it is without the vibrant art. Although it can look stiff at times, overall it's creative, colorful, and I highly enjoy the color scheme; it also dynamically adds to the narrative and storytelling as well. My only problem with this book is that I wish it was longer. It could’ve went more in depth and answered some questions I had toward the end. If this ever becomes a series, I’ll be very happy! She is most known for her critically acclaimed, LA Times Book Prize Winning, Eisner nominated, debut graphic novel Wash Day Diaries, co-created with artist Robyn Smith. The comic came out in July 2022 and was published by Chronicle Books.

I also appreciated the mental health representation. I think the way that the character's friend responded to her depression was a good depiction of how a situation like that may play out in real life. This graphic novel also has one of my favorite visualizations of group texts. The way the art interacted with the text exchanges welcomed you into the friend group and felt like you were a part of the conversation. The art, in general, was stunning and the monochromatic color palette for each character gave such effortless vibes for each individual. But beyond this, I loved everything about this book. I loved every woman, all their stories, how wash day shapes their day, their week. This book is genuine, heartwarming, funny, emotional and just damn good. I wash my hair with shampoo twice a week. My mid-week shampoo is not super intense; it’s just to wash out the build-up from leave-ins. I put it in my hands, lather, and then apply it directly to my scalp; I don’t pour it directly onto my hair. Normally, I don’t condition in the shower for my mid-week wash. I apply either a leave-in or conditioner daily, and I oil my scalp every night. How has your hair care routine evolved over time?So many funny and true to life moments. I screamed when Davene pulled that Jamaican flag out of her bra! This was such a lovely read! The four main characters were unique, complex, and super relatable. I was kind of reminded of Sex and the City, four gorgeous and funny women living their best lives, without any of the toxicity. And instead of the City being a character, we move from story to story through a narrative centered on haircare.
