After managing to get the place up and running, Benjamin - who was a journalist before becoming a zoo CEO - wrote a book about the trials and tribulations of running a zoo, and the tragic loss of his wife, Katherine, just after the family moved in. So how are the two children doing nowadays? “Well, although I would never wish what happened to our family on anyone, there is no doubt I am closer to my children than I would have been had Katherine survived. My point was that all these crazy things have gotten my mind spinning and yet I stay up an entire night to read an (albeit rather humerus) account of a man acquiring a run down zoo against all odds and all the crazy things that happen when you decide to do something so majorly insane.

The book is also full of meaningless phrases: business plan, facing a huge challenge, identity and ethos (when it comes to the name for the zoo), profit optimization, risk minimization, comprehensive analysis of the situation. And throughout the book you get a rigid, official language, as if reading a report or a management manual. This bothered me the most; somehow it was difficult for me to find the humor or excess of emotions mentioned in the official description of the book. Would I recommend the book to someone who hates non-fiction? I would recommend this book to anyone interested in zoos. It's an interesting and easy read. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie and loaning this book out to the Significant Other and my mom. A lot of other reviewers on Goodreads seem to think that it was told in a very amateur style and was jumbled but I think that's pretty par for the course with first time memoirs, so it didn't bother me. Benjamin’s story is a remarkable tale of anxious wolves, awkward creditors, escaping big cats, the power of family and the triumph of hope over tragedy.’ Nominations/SpecialAwards". In August 2011, it was announced that Icelandic musician JónÞór"Jónsi"Birgisson, the lead singer of the band SigurRós, would be composing the music scores for We Bought a Zoo. [11] Director Crowe described the choice as "only natural", since "Jónsi has been a part of the making of We Bought A Zoo from the very beginning". [11]

We Bought a Zoo (Film Tie-in): The amazing true story of a broken-down zoo, and the 200 animals that changed a family forever That is how I feel about the zoo," Mee says. "Rebuilding it was cathartic. But the zoo itself is also a tremendous place for healing. It connects you to the circle of life. We have births, we have deaths and they remind you that we are just another family unit that has suffered a loss – like the tigers who lost their grandfather or the tapirs who had a stillborn calf." MaggieElizabethJones as Rosie Mee, Benjamin's 7-year-old daughter and Dylan's younger sister, who is very curious about all of the animals in the zoo and thinks living at a zoo is a grand adventure.

In the market for a house and an adventure, Benjamin Mee moved his family to an unlikely new home: a dilapidated zoo in the English countryside. Mee had a dream to refurbish the zoo and run it as a family business. His friends and colleagues thought he was crazy.Roger Ebert, reviewing for the Chicago Sun-Times, awarded the film two and a half out of four stars, describing the film as "too much formula and not enough human interest". He added that the film's "pieces go together too easily, the plot is too inevitable, and we feel little real energy between the players". However, he praised Damon, who he said "makes a sturdy and likable Benjamin Mee". [18] The New York Times reviewer Manohla Dargis criticized Crowe's direction, writing that it "makes the escalating tension between Benjamin and Dylan the story's soft center," while keeping "the brutality of illness and death... safely off-screen". She also noted that the film uses "classic movie logic", specifically pointing out the way that Benjamin quits his job and that he "doesn't agonize about how he'll keep his children housed, fed and clothed". On the other hand, Dargis wrote that "you may not buy his [Cameron's] happy endings, but it's a seductive ideal when all of God's creatures, great and small, buxom and blond, exist in such harmony."" [19]

Milo has been home-educated (“his choice”) and is currently studying for an Open University Science unit. Ella is happily at school locally: “she prefers to be with her gang of friends” and both are, says Benjamin, doing well. As for himself, Benjamin says he has come to terms with his bereavement. The in-progress Amur Leopard enclosure. While it used to home jaguars (who ate part of the wooden hutch) and lions, Benjamin hopes it will soon hold one of the rarest species on earth (Image: Shannon Brown/PlymouthLive) After nine years in private ownership, during which Benjamin developed the collection, rebuilt the reputation of the Zoo, launched the Education and Research Department, he and his family donated the Zoo to a newly created charity, Dartmoor Zoological Society (DZS ). DZS is now operated by a dedicated team of specialists that report to the trustees who have overall responsibility for the running and development of the DZS. At the time, I would have preferred not to have the pressure but, with hindsight, the zoo and all its demands probably kept me sane.” On July 7 2007, the newly re-licensed Dartmoor Zoological Park opened, complete with new signs that Katherine, a graphic designer, had created.

This terrible loss could have been the end of everything, but somehow the zoo, complicated as it was, became our salvation. It wasn't just that the zoo was a distraction. It was a bit like being part of a large farm, where life goes on, despite the loss of individual people or animals. There are births and deaths, and even greater issues to consider, like the welfare and development of all the animals, and the staff. The zoo is bigger than any one person, and the cycle of life is very evident within it. The zoo scenes were filmed at Greenfield Ranch in HiddenValley, ThousandOaks,California, where a zoo was erected for the filming. [8] [9] Development Elle Fanning as Lily Miska, [7] the 13-year old home-schooled cousin of Kelly and worker at the zoo's restaurant who lives within the zoo. Although she is too young to legally work, she is paid "under the table" out of her cousin's salary. She likes Dylan, who is at first unaware of this fact. We Bought a Zoo: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals that Changed Their Lives Forever Despite losing his wife to cancer, Benjamin has been able to make a success of Dartmoor Zoo and bring up his children there

I don't particularly like looking at animals behind wire. But, as a zoo director, I understand that it is absolutely essential that we keep them there. We can build up a broad genetic population in zoos and then if we can work out a way to regain an area the size of Siberia, just for tigers, then we can re-release them." The book is funny enough to have me laughing out loud in parts and in others, sad, indeed, I nearly cried at one point. I liked the way the guy clearly took his commitment seriously but at the same time was able to see the humour in some of the situations he found himself in, albeit afterwards, in the case of the horse-tranquilised tiger. The film's plot and actual events differ. The real Benjamin Mee is British, whereas in the film he is American. The story was adapted for an American audience and Mee approved the changes. [26] The actual zoo Mee bought is DartmoorZoologicalPark, located in Devon,England. [27] The fictional zoo in the film is called Rosemoor Wildlife Park and is located in California, US.Benjamin learns that Katherine bequeathed him an investment account with instructions to use the money wisely while listening to his heart. Duncan advises him to walk away and start over with the money, but Benjamin decides to use the money for the repairs. The zoo scenes were filmed at Greenfield Ranch in Hidden Valley, Thousand Oaks, California, where a zoo was erected for the filming. [8] [9] Development [ edit ] Recently the zoo has been given a pair of endangered white-naped cranes, and Dartmoor has been accepted on to a breeding programme monitored by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
