About this deal

Here's a round-up of new children's books from the last year (2023), which we think any child aged 8 to 9 will love.

kids of the names of K2 and Izzabird o'hero, and Mable and Theo smith, are the main characters. Nothing special, they have your typical shy and quite-soon to be powerful boy with a optimistic and brave sister. Then they have two lesser main characters that are either, organised and protective or a kind and caring young girl. Cressida Cowell almost always follows the same character structure. Which Way to Anywhere is a story full of twists and turns, encompassing magic and mystery. K2 and Izzabird O'Hero are born into a magical family and sworn to secrecy. After their father mysteriously disappears (presumed dead), they acquire a new family who they need to keep their secret from. Theo and Mabel Smith (their stepsiblings) do not like the O'Heros and are highly suspicious of them and try to make their lives a misery. Little do they know that K2 has a secret gift: he draws maps of worlds that are beyond the wildest of imaginations but this gift puts the family in danger when Cyril Sidewinder - a Geography teacher in disguise - terrorises the family and kidnaps a child. The warring stepsiblings need to put their differences aside and embark on a journey to new lands to rescue their sister and father before it is too late! But K2 has a secret gift: He draws maps of worlds that are beyond the wildest imaginations. Worlds with six hundred moons, burning rivers, and dark, twisty jungles alive with plants that hunt by the smell of fear. But what K2 doesn’t know is that the maps he draws are real . I loved this book as it was epic and fast paced and crazy... I especially loved the toothbrushes!' 9 year old The-faceThere is no Magic here on Earth. At least, that's what you've been told . . . But in an ordinary-looking house in an ordinary-looking village, live a group of children who are about to uncover a secret.

Hello Yellow - 80 Books to Help Children Nurture Good Mental Health and Support With Anxiety and Wellbeing - I hate to say, but really when all this book has is 4 kids, an evil force that they only encounter once and an illegal piece of paper; it's just a pile of words. This is a book about magic and amazing technology and different worlds and the impacts our careless actions can have. But it is more than that. It is a book about family. The Telegraph values your comments but kindly requests all posts are on topic, constructive and respectful. Please review our K2 O'Hero is a seemingly ordinary boy from a truly extraordinary family - he and his twin sister Izzabird have been sworn to keep their family's history of magical explorers a secret. Not even their infuriating stepsiblings, Theo and Mable, know magic exists. They believe K2 to be the most hopeless person they have ever known.

My first read of a Cressida Cowell novel, and honestly it's very solid! Cowell constructs an entirely surreal universe with magic that pulls every which way, but keeps the narrative grounded by way of making it, at heart, a story about a conflicted group of siblings in a difficult but very real dynamic. The beginning of the book asks: who will be your favourite of the four heroes? And honestly, I just can’t choose. Each of the four siblings has their own unique flare and set of strengths that complement each other. Without their individuality, they wouldn’t grow to be the awesome team they become – even if they don’t realise it at first.

I have so many questions, including those raised by the story’s narrator. I’m looking forward to getting to know the Aunts better; they have the potential to be fabulously fun to follow around. I definitely need to borrow one of their vacuum cleaners. At certain points it did feel like a 6 year old had written it but it was enjoyable and not horribleJoin former Waterstones Children’s Laureate Cressida Cowell as she talks about her out-of-this-world new series, Which Way to Anywhere, and reveals how she was inspired by an idea she first had 25 years ago. She’ll also talk about her bestselling How to Train Your Dragon books and The Wizards of Once series. You can be inspired by your own experiences. Ideas I had about Vikings and dragons during summer holidays when I was 9 years old became 12 books, and a film and TV series. I had a slightly unusual childhood (I spent my summers on an uninhabited Scottish Island), but the world we all live in is full of extraordinary, wonderful idea for stories. You only have to watch an episode of Blue Planet to see that’s true. Two families are thrown together by marriage and, they don't like each other very much. However, a number of strange and wonderful things happen that mean that they have to work together and put their differences aside if they are to save the world.
