Not many writers could match writing about life experiences in the manner Clarice Lispector writes about them. For a 23 year-old at the time this is a pretty remarkable book I have to say. Almost like a Brazilian Virginia Woolf but with more of a darkly humorous existential dread. Not a lot actually happens, but then one does not read Lispector for a conventonal plot. Passage after passage I was hypnotized by Joana's lingering thoughts and affinities; dive into her ocean of solitudes and walk the corners of her family surroundings. Lispector's technique and poetic use of language really does make her feel like one of a kind.

It flowed so well and I was drawn in right from the beginning. I love Viper’s character so I was really excited to get even more of him. Just like her other books, the characters, dialogue, and story all feel organic. Nothing ever feels forced or unnatural and it really serves to draw you entirely into the story. I won’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t read Cement Heart so just a warning that this review is going to be purposely vague. Eldredge claims that men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to what he characterizes as authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the desires of their hearts. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and anecdotes about his family and references elements of pop culture such as the film Braveheart and lyrics from songs. It is not fun or easy to read. The style is one of extreme introspection and stream of consciousness. I think many people go through this kind of thing at the cusp of adulthood. She wrote the book when she was nineteen. I think I went through it but I didn't know or understand what it was and I sure didn't talk about it to anyone, except maybe a little with a friend of my parents who was nothing like my parents.

I met Clarice Lispector at the exact moment that she published Near to the Wild Heart. The meeting took place in a restaurant in Cinelândia. We had lunch and our conversation strayed from literary matters. … The least I can say is that she was stunning. It was autumn, the leaves in the square were falling, and the grayness of the day helped underscore the beauty and luminosity of Clarice Lispector. Alongside the foreign climate was that strange voice, the guttural diction which rings in my ears to this day. Sometimes she rebelled distantly: life is long ... Challenging 'the marriage plot' that underpins so much bourgeois fiction, Lispector has her protagonist exclaim: Though spunky Savannah Ensworth was born into wealth and privilege, she longs for the freedom allotted to men. Marriage is the very last thing on her to-do list. As the sole heir to her father’s fortune, she’s in no hurry to turn the freedom that comes with wealth over to a husband. Even without the epigraph from James Joyce— He was alone. He was unheeded, happy, and near to the wild heart of life —I would’ve recognized the influence of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man on the novel. Its beginning is a delight as the young protagonist plays with and thinks about words: “She went over to the little table where the books were, played with them by looking at them from a distance.”This is such a gorgeous story. Cement Heart showed us Viper getting his girl, this is the story of him keeping her. It was definitely heartbreaking at times, but the emotion was beautifully written and I felt every moment. And it was worth every bit of pain for the swoony happy ending, and double epilogue that finished off Viper’s story perfectly. Forgotten the title or the author of a book?
