About this deal

The Xero Shoes 360, Prio, and HFS all feature removable insoles. The insoles used have a thin level of responsiveness and do a fairly good job at providing an additional layer of comfort for anyone experimenting with and acclimating to barefoot shoes. With their low-profile, lightweight design which accentuates the natural stability of your own two feet, barefoot shoes (like the Merrell Vapor Glove 5) make for fantastic gym trainers.

In this comparison, I will help you decide between two of the most popular options in the Xero Shoe lineup: the Prio and the HFS. All in all, I think that the Xero HFS barefoot running shoes are a great choice for those who are looking for an affordable and durable minimalist or barefoot shoe. The Zero Drop design promotes natural foot motion and the wide toe box allows ample room for your toes to move freely. Natural FIT — Our sandals and shoes have wide-toe boxes to let your feet spread out naturally. They have non-elevated “zero-drop” soles for proper posture. Ridge, S. T., Olsen, M. T., Bruening, D. A., Jurgensmeier, K., Griffin, D., D avis, I. S., & Johnson, A. W. (2018). Walking in minimalist shoes is effective for strengthening foot muscles. Faculty Publications. 3159. The Xero Shoes Prio features also features an arrow construction through the forefoot, mid-foot, and heel, and this model has forefoot grooves for additional forefoot maneuverability.Matt: The Xero HFS is a fantastic minimal/barefoot-inspired shoe. Based on the accomodating upper, great breathability and solid underfoot feel, I have no major recommendations outside of adjusting the sizing. This may require modifying the toe guard as well, but that does give some structure to the toe box.

As you can gather, both Xero Shoes and Vivobarefoot will be great options if you want to reclaim your natural barefoot strength. The similarities between Vivobarefoot and Xero Shoes I’m training for a half marathon right now. I’m not new to running, but would be new to BAREFOOT running. Would you still go HFS, or start with Prio? Sporting a host of new features and a bold design, here’s how the HFS fared as a strength trainer, a mid-distance runner, and a trail trekker. Upper & fit To perform the analysis, I use University grade measurement pods to estimate ground reaction force, peak impact force, pronation angle/speed, and much more.Skratch Recovery, Coffee Flavor:Mental and physical boost post run. Coffee flavor is excellent and goes great straight into a fresh brewed cup I never realized how I was really doing more harm to my body than good in these high dollar shoes until I stepped out in my Xero shoes. For more versatile training and CrossFit-style workouts, there’s a fairly clear winner between these three models. Of these shoes, the Xero Shoes 360 is the strongest performer for CrossFit and CrossFit-style training. In addition, I also really like this model for more versatile training due to its removable insole being a bit more responsive in nature. It’s nice to have the option to leave it in or take it out.

As a gross generalization, the materials used at Vivobarefoot are of much higher quality and will likely last longer. The HFS’s sole has a new tire tread-inspired sole that’s made to handle roads and has extra traction. Vivobarefoot are more narrow in the heel and wide towards the forefoot. Much like a fan shape. Think about other European brands; they are often narrow, or sometimes what they call a “performance fit.” Huarache-inspired design — the adjustable instep and midfoot straps are not just eye-catching but functional, giving you a secure and comfortable fit.Even over gym flooring and then the laminate in my home, the HFS outsole gripped the ground enough to remain confident in performing stair drills and hopping while remaining pliable and smooth enough to safely transition between movements without any catching or tripping over the dreaded, “turf monster.” Barefoot shoes don’t have this issue. They don’t have spots that will breakdown and cause the shoe to not perform the way it was supposed to. The whole purpose of barefoot shoes is to just protect your feet from the elements. Even though there are certainly some interesting challenges, keeping something constant is oddly comfortable in a world full of inconsistency. While a new model to the Xero Shoes line, the HFS was also nothing if not a consistent training partner in the absence of any others. Matt: The HFS provides a minimal and highly flexible ride. The 3.5 mm insole and 5mm outsole provides excellent ground feel while still maintaining protection. This does require softer and more careful landings as all stones and obstacles on the ground can be felt. Weirdly, the insole still provides a mildly soft underfoot sensation while walking, but this is not a cushioned shoe at all. The sole flexes in all directions, letting your foot do what it wants to do. This makes it somewhat adaptable to a variety of uses. I have used the Xero HFS on a variety of surfaces, but found that works best on the road and indoor areas. The outsole grip is fantastic even on wet pavement and there is no wear on the outsole after 20 miles of running and many more walking. A few things are worth pointing out before we dive into the metrics we used to score each shoe. First and foremost, all of the shoes included in this review comprise some of the best and most popular options for barefoot and minimalist shoes available on the market. Since our side-by-side testing is based on comparisons, a low score does not mean that a particular pair of shoes isn't worthy of consideration. It simply means that they do not perform quite as well relative to the competition — all of these shoes are excellent in at least one aspect, and often low scoring shoes are fantastic options for specialized use.
