About this deal

You’re thinking of going for lower capacity: You can really only get the most out of the Seagate FireCuda 530 with 1TB and up, so if you’re gunning for a 500GB SSD, you can get a cheaper one that does the same job. The T700 is for gamers, creatives, and professionals seeking the ultimate in solid-state drive performance that today only a Gen 5 SSD offers. But unless your desktop is a recent, high-performance model that supports this standard, being able to run a PCI Express 5.0 SSD at peak speeds requires a considerable additional investment. You must buy a recent desktop that supports SSDs built on the PCIe 5.0 standard, upgrade an existing recent rig, or build one from scratch. By making such an investment and having the T700 serve as its brains, though, you're future-proofing your entire setup. But first, the shape issue. Any M.2 drive you are looking at will be labeled with a four- or five-digit number as part of its specifications or model name. It's a measurement, in millimeters: The first two numbers define the drive's width, the second two the length. All the SSDs in our roundup meet or exceed the recommended requirements set by Sony and are natively PS5-compatible. Keep in mind that regardless of which drive you choose, you will need a PS5 SSD heatsink. This is because the console has no way to dissipate heat with the M.2 port and metal cover as a computer's motherboard would. Without a heatsink, the thermals could become dangerously hot, and not only damage the SSD, but also your console. FAQs Now, to reiterate an important point: A drive may come in the M.2 form factor, but that says nothing about the bus that it makes use of. Determining that is just as important as making sure it fits.

You don't have a proper heatsink: We strongly recommend getting the SN850 designed specially for the PS5 as the standard version does not come with a heatsink fitted and can overheat. In our testing, we found that the Nextorage NEM-PA performed as good, or even better, than many flagship models from other companies running the same hardware for much cheaper price point. What was most encouraging about the 4TB variant especially is how the drive actually gets faster when under heavy loads instead of slowing down, meaning it's a dream to transfer over the contents of your PS5 game library to internal storage in minutes. You want the absolute fastest SSD for PS5: The Samsung 980 Pro is no longer the flagship Gen 4 drive it was once, and has since been replaced by the 990 Pro. Its random read/write operations aren’t the best among PCIe 4.0 SSDS, so this SSD is best suited for loading very large files like video games, large media files, or as a boot drive. If you're a custom PC builder with RGB-lighting fever, and have RGB-ified just about every inch and corner of your system, perk up: ADATA has brought pretty lights to the internal SSD final frontier. The XPG Spectrix S40G is the most flamboyant NVMe drive we've seen to date. With its exceptional 4K write speeds, top-notch sequential-read speeds, and respectable durability rating, ADATA makes having a top-of-the line, over-the-top SSD affordable and fun, in one fell swoop. Who It's For That's not a bad thing. Especially in the case of laptops, an older machine might supportonlyM.2 SATA-bus SSDs, and that will be the boundary of your upgrade path...end of story. As a result, the only reasons you'd upgrade the drive, in that situation, would be to get more capacity, or if the old one failed. As rated, the SN850 boasts a read speed of 7,000MB/s and a write speed of 5,300MB/s, and our tests showed the SN850’s read speed nearing its advertised limit at 6,992MB/s with write speeds at 5,160MB/s. This makes it adept at handling rigorous tasks like video editing, game loading, and more.

In our testing, we found that the Samsung 990 Pro was able to achieve read and write speeds of 7,465.49MB/s of 6,887.68MB/s respectively in our industry standard tests. That's a considerable improvement on the brand's previous flagship of around 50% give or take. Loading times and file transfer times are equally impressive as around 10GB of data made the jump to this NVMe SSD in less than four seconds, that's how fast we're talking here.

The ADATA XPG Spectrix S40 is an unapologetically bright RGB-lit PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 SSD that blings up your PC. Its 4K read and write speeds should keep most gamers happy, too. The ADATA XPG Spectrix S40G carries some respectable wins out of its duel with other competing drives we've tested, and it looked great doing it. What helps the Seagate FireCuda 530 stand out the most has to be its write endurance which is seriously high-level. You can expect around 1,275TBW for 1TB and 2,550TBW for 2TB and that's substantially higher than what you will find on many SSDs for PS5. Couple this with an excellent all-over heatsink and you've got a winning combination here. It's no longer quite the fastest, but it's still well worth slotting into your system at these prices. Early examples of the latest generation of M.2 drives, using the PCI Express 5.0 bus, also come in the Type-2280 format, but it's expected that some PCIe 5.0 slots on new motherboards will be built to support the larger Type-25110 format (25mm by 110mm), so we may well see PCIe 5.0 SSDs with these dimensions as well. PCIe 5 drives are capable of tremendous throughput speeds (in excess of 10,000MBps) that should generate abundant heat, and the SSDs we have seen so far come with substantial built-in heatsinks. You just want a PS5 SSD with its own integrated heatsink: If you'd rather have a drive with its own built-in heatsink then the other options in our list will be better choices. The Samsung 980 Pro is quoted at reaching sequential read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s and we found in our testing that this model came within striking distance achieving 6,783 MB/s. That's more than fast enough for file transfers and pushes far beyond the recommended 5,500 MB/s that the console requires.
