About this deal

Quill stems went out of fashion because the contemporary bolt-on stem and fork design is stronger and lighter. It’s easier to manufacture too, because with a quill stem the steerer tube needs to be threaded, with a screw-on top headset bearing. Found on some mountain bikes and also some drop-bar machines such as Giant’s cyclocross bikes. 1 1/8in steerer, 35mm bar clamp

When we talk about stem standards here, we’re primarily talking about compatibility with the streerer tube on your bike (measured in inches), but also the handlebar clamp (measured in millimetres). The Giant has a 100mm stem on just now and longer reach bars, you can see with getting a 60mm stem I would get the reach down to 510mm and with compact bars the hoods would be closer too, I think 10mm here and there will be fine, I'm not an inflexible cripple yet... On that note I think I could cope with a 70mm stem if you think the handling would be mad with a 60mm. Industry Nine’s A-Series mountain bike stems are crafted from domestically-sourced 7075 aluminum billet into a svelte design achieving a nexus of form and function. Using advanced manufacturing techniques honed over decades in our CNC machine shop, we continue our proud tradition of offering riders uncompromising components. Its been easy enough on the CX bike - 90 mm stem and a set of short reach compact bars has got me within millimetres of it.Bike stems connect the handlebars to the steering tube of the bike frame. Getting the right stem is essential for customising height and ensuring you feel comfortable on your bike. The height of your handlebars is one of the components that dictates your stance in the saddle, whether you’re more upright or seating more forward. Road Bike Stems

The main standards you’ll find for bike stems are summarised below. As ever, more exist – and some bikes, such as the Canyon Aeroad CFR, use a proprietary system – but this captures the majority of common options on the market. 1 1/8in steerer, 31.8mm bar clamp Personally I have 3 three stems and two bars that I will swap out. My default is a 0 degree rise 60mm stem on a flat 720mm bar, I will swap in a -17 stem for big pedalling days. For more aggressive riding I have a 50mm stem on a small rise 740mm width bar. These swaps change the feel of the bike dramatically and even require a bit of suspension tuning to rebalance the bike.Mountain bike stems are typically around 50-80mm long, while road bike stems are longer, starting at around 80mm and extending to 120mm or longer as the frame size increases. Gravel bike stems typically sit somewhere between the two. A shorter stem will reduce the reach and provide a more upright position, which might help if you’re feeling too stretched out. On the flip side, if you’re feeling cramped on the bike, using a slightly longer stem will increase the reach. Although bike stems may look simple, there’s a significant amount of complexity in choosing the right one for your bike, largely due to the bike industry’s custom of developing multiple standards. Stem length has a big impact on the overall fit and ride of your bike. David Caudery / Immediate Media
