About this deal

Compacts are very versatile and ideal for general use, nature, sporting events, wildlife observation & birding at close to medium ranges: Choosing the right magnification for your desired uses is also extremely important as it affects the way a binocular performs in a whole host of different ways. Hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and even birders are being targeted by these lightweight ‘take anywhere’ green-bodied roof prism binoculars, which are under half the price of the other Kowa option here. Despite this, they don’t stint on features found in physically larger alternatives. These binoculars have small 21mm objective lenses, so they're not ideal for astronomy. However, we've included them because they can still give you that 'wow' experience when you use their 18x magnification to observe the moon for the first time.

In the same way, big lenses are able to capture and potentially transmit more light into the instrument. This increase in light ‘information’ can improve image brightness and quality. We especially appreciate the large, tactile center-focus knob that enables adjustments on chilly evenings without removing gloves. The 6.9-degree field of view is very respectable too.

Most people use binoculars to observe distant objects and so this will be of little importance. However there are also some uses where having a very close minimum focus distance is desirable. These binoculars offer a wider field of view than you might expect from an 8x compact model, with a 6.8-degree field of view. They use K9 glass, which is of good quality (though less expensive than BaK 4 glass), along with roof prisms that have a phase correction coating. This makes them great for people who wear glasses, thanks to their adjustable eyecups. They're also designed to prevent fogging from the inside due to nitrogen filling and are waterproof according to IPX7 standards, meaning they can stay submerged in water for up to 30 minutes. This is reassuring if you plan to use them near water, like on a boat or at a lake or beach. Indeed, for most uses, 8x or 10x is ideal and going any higher has many detrimental effects that will seriously hamper your viewing experience. When separated into monoculars, two users can benefit from the additional light-gathering power over the human eye, making it easier to spot more stars and celestial objects. However, this is a rather expensive option for buying low-power instruments — you'd be better off buying two decent pairs of binoculars instead. Although they may not be a top recommendation, we've included these binoculars for their cleverness and novelty factor.

These affordable reverse Porro small binoculars are made by Apexel, a Chinese company famous for its smartphone lens accessories. Whilst on a recent safari holiday in Zimbabwe some friends of mine were using a pair of compact porro prism Pentax 8x21 UCF Mini Binoculars and I thought that I would take some time out and give them a review. Please note that Pentax have updated these and they are now known as Pentax UCF R Binoculars, but as they are so similar and have almost identical specifications, I think that this review is still relevant and should give you a good idea of what to expect. The brightness of the moon allowed us to truly study the Aculon T02 8x21’s optical system. While views were beautifully pin sharp thanks to the multicoated optics, we did detect a touch of chromatic aberration (also known as color-fringing) along the lunar limb. While noticeable as a purple-blue edging, our views were unspoiled. For Astronomy. Use a tripod with higher magnifications, but for handheld astronomy, if you want a clear view of the stars, keep the power down.

My Opticron

This is one of the weaknesses you have to accept when choosing a compact binocular. In poor light, you will not perceive as bright an image as a larger binocular with the same or similar magnification. A 42mm objective lens has four times the surface area of a 21mm lens, and so has the ability to captures four times more light (area = pi x radius squared). Binoculars have lots of different specs, but there are two key ones that are best to focus on if you want to keep things simple. These are magnification and lens size. For customers who enjoy star gazing or distant wildlife including bird watching, the S Series deliver high-quality, bright and clear viewing. These are suitable for low-light conditions thanks to a larger than 40mm objective. These Pentax US binoculars weigh just 194 grams and measure 13 x 11.6 x 5.5cm, making them incredibly lightweight. Despite this, they still boast high-quality, fully multi-coated optics. These are the lightest binoculars in the Pentax range, helped no doubt by using plastic instead of a metal chassis, and there is no rubber protective armor. Instead, there are two small thumb rests that help with grip.

The two measures, magnification, and size of objective lenses relate to the field of view. Field of view is how wide an area is encompassed in the image seen through the binocular. However and as you probably know, the pupils in your eyes expand in low light conditions, allowing them to take in more light. Their maximum diameter varies from person to person and with age, but in general, we take 7mm as being a good rule of thumb. Thus if you want a binocular with an excellent low light performance, you need a large exit pupil of around 7mm. To achieve this you either need extremely large lenses or a very low power, or a combination of both. So, for example, a popular low light binocular is a 7x50 and has a 7.1mm exit pupil (50÷7). You can also have too much of a good thing with the binoculars supplying your eyes with more light than they need. The 16mm eye relief makes them friendly for glasses wearers, and the twist-up rubber eyecups make them comfortable for all users, especially for longer viewing sessions.
