Spoken by 45 million people worldwide, Ukrainian is a melodic language. It’s full of subtle shades of meaning, lending itself well to poetry and prose. With some of the most skilled software developers in the world , Ukraine has also attracted tech industry giants such as Apple, Microsoft, Skype, and Oracle. These and many other Fortune 500 companies have established research and development facilities in Ukraine. The three-minute video was filmed under conditions of duress. I loved the book. I hope and pray that things go well for Zelensky and his beautiful country and I hope they come out of this with their freedom intact.

The book has a beautiful preface by Arkady Ostrovsky, in which he talks about the 'We're here' speech, about his experience while meeting Zelensky, and offers his thoughts on the war and the current situation. And needless to say, it is longer than any Zelensky speech in the book 😊 But it is a beautiful, insightful preface. The book also has a beautiful introduction by the man himself, President Zelensky. Alex Kovzhun, a one-time adviser to Ukraine’s former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, said Russian soldiers could be divided into two sorts: “There are the young conscripts who are scared shitless. And there are career guys who have fought in Syria and the Donbas.” And yet in the end I yield to the words of the man who was once the voice of Paddington Bear and who is now the tribune of freedom. John Adams once said that the American nation was talked into being. Zelenskiy is the voice of Ukraine and, as he might say himself, our voice too. Zelensky’s words reprinted here are historical. I’ll briefly comment on the introduction penned by Arkady Ostrovsky, an editor for the Economist, in October 2022.

President Volodymyr Zelensky But low morale among invading troops might be one reason why Russia’s blitzkrieg plan to overwhelm Ukraine appears not to have progressed at the speed Putin would have wanted. The assumption in Moscow was that the operation would be swift and successful. Soldiers were given food and fuel supplies for only two or three days, the videos suggest. He even brandished a bullet casing used to kill a Ukrainian reservist who had sung at the Paris national opera, saying: "It would be fatal to think that the situation in our country does not concern you."He added: “Since 2014 the Russian government has been brainwashing its population with propaganda. They try and make Russia believe Ukraine is not a real country and say fascist monsters have captured it.” For Russians, meanwhile, there is a pithy plea to disregard Putin's propaganda. "The Ukraine in your news and the Ukraine in real life are two completely different countries," he says. "The main difference is that ours exists." The sense of moral purpose increases as the speeches unfold because the underlying strategic objective changes. When he speaks to the Ukrainian parliament in May 2019, Zelenskiy’s aim is to finish the war through dialogue. By the time of his Independence Day speech in August 2022, the ambition is greater: victory rather than peace. An insider’s account of the rampant misconduct within the Trump administration, including the tumult surrounding the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021.

These are the quotable soundbites, of course, from speeches intended to be heard in their entirety. How many end up being truly memorable, only history will decide.I’m almost 30 now, so I understand that of course the world doesn’t work like that, of course it isn’t that benevolent or simple. These are absolutely devastating days for Ukraine. As Ukrainians seek refuge in neighboring countries and beyond, the importance of clear communication is paramount. When the world feels turbulent, being understood in your own language can make a real difference. If you’re unable to offer refuge or struggling to find the words like many of us are, your actions matter. Please consider donating to these valuable causes. Despite an economy based largely on manufacturing and agriculture, 21st century Ukraine has been moving firmly toward a cutting-edge, startup economy. This builds upon a long tradition of Ukrainian innovation in science and technology — including the prototypes of compact discs and X-ray machines. Some of them thought they were on military exercises. They didn’t anticipate resistance,” Artem Mazhulin, a 31-year-old English teacher from Kharkiv said. “A lot are conscripts born in 2002 or 2003. We are talking about 19-year-old and 20-year-old boys.”
