About this deal

Director Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s 1988 adaptation of his own 1982 manga, Akira, is considered one of the greatest film ever made if only for its influence on all the post-apocalyptic cyberpunk stories to come. Both the manga and film pre-date Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell (1989), Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm (a.k.a. Battle Angel Alita) (1990), and many others. You can see the influence in animation from specific things like the way Kaneda slides in his motorbike, to the use of a telekinetic child in Looper inspired by Tetsuo, the bullet-time affects within The Matrix, and countless other pop culture references. So engrained within our cultural lexicon is the visual iconography of Akira, that you’ve likely engaged within it somehow and possibly never known it. Thirty-two years after Akira’s initial release, Funimation released a limited edition 4K UHD edition of the seminal work that offers more than just a fresh coat of paint, but a whole new experience for a new generation to enjoy and explore.

Akira has a number of impressive components. Not only is Akira beautifully animated, the filmmaking benefits from the expert Otomo is a big fan of Tetsujin 28-go. As a result, his naming conventions match the characters featured in Tetsujin 28-go: Kaneda shares his name with the protagonist of Tetsujin 28-go; Colonel Shikishima shares his name with Professor Shikishima of Tetsujin 28-go, while Tetsuo is named after Shikishima's son Tetsuo Shikishima; Akira 's Ryūsaku is named after Ryūsaku Murasame. In addition, Takashi has a "26" tattooed on his hand which closely resembles the font used in Tetsujin 28-go. The namesake of the series, Akira, is the 28th in a line of psychics that the government has developed, the same number as Tetsujin-28. Esper Kiyoko forewarns Shikishima of Neo-Tokyo's impending destruction, but the city's parliament dismisses Shikishima's concerns, leading him to consider killing Tetsuo to prevent another cataclysm. Meanwhile, Tetsuo escapes from the hospital, steals Kaneda's motorcycle, and tries to flee Neo-Tokyo with his girlfriend Kaori, but the Clowns ambush them. The Capsules rescue Tetsuo and Kaori, but Tetsuo suffers intense headaches and hallucinations and is re-hospitalized. McFarland, Kevin (September 9, 2013). One of the big advantages of adapting his pre-existing work was that Otomo had already created a fully developed world in which to drop his revised characters for the film, with little need to set the scene for new viewers. Because of this, the film can initially be confusing for those who have never read the manga. The advantage is that Neo Tokyo feels like a real, breathing world which exists outside of the bounds of the narrative. No matter how many times you watch the film, it always feels like there’s more to discover just beyond the edges of the frame. While it may seem like a shame that Otomo never made a sequel to explore more of that world, its open-endedness granted it longevity. As 2001 proved, sometimes the questions are more interesting than the answers, but the manga is still available for those who wish to know more.

In the singularity, Kaneda experiences Tetsuo and the espers' childhoods, including his and Tetsuo's friendship and the espers' psychic training before Tokyo's destruction. The espers return Kaneda to Neo-Tokyo, informing him that Akira will take Tetsuo to safety and that Kei is developing psychic powers. Ōnishi witnesses the birth of a universe but is killed in his lab's destruction. After consuming most of Neo-Tokyo, the singularity disappears, and water floods the crater left in its place. Mourning Tetsuo's loss, Kaneda discovers that Kei and Kai have survived, and they ride off into the ruins while Shikishima watches the sunrise. At an unspecified plane of reality, Tetsuo introduces himself and triggers the creation of a universe, finally transcending the limitations of human existence. After Pioneer acquired the rights to the film, a second English dub was commissioned in 2001 for the DVD release to obtain THX certification.
