About this deal

Every summer, Alex and Poppy have taken trips together, at first on a shoestring budget. Then, Poppy is hired by R+R, a travel magazine, and their vacations change. But Poppy knows their friendship never will, and she anticipates every getaway, looking forward to time spent in Alex’s company and the fun they have together. Then something happens. And Poppy and Alex don’t speak for two years. It did make me think about the meaning of love and the context of love more widely, yet I still can't agree with some of the principles on which this book is based and the idea that unless love follows certain rules (e.g. "there is no fear in love"), it cannot be true love. Roman’s character is written amazingly. I enjoyed reading from their point of view, they were a magnetic main character. I just loved reading their story and felt every emotion that they were going through..even if sometimes you wanted to strangle him!!! His self - centredness did make him insufferable sometimes!!!! I really recommend this for anyone hurting from childhood, or an abusive relationship, or loneliness, or anything. bell hooks will give you a little reassurance and then tell you how to get better. Like a good therapist.

All About Love: New Visions (Love Song to the Nation Book 1) All About Love: New Visions (Love Song to the Nation Book 1)

I admit to not being a big fan of self-help books. I'm sure that they can be a great help to people, but I've given them a few tries and ended up annoyed each time. Sadly, 'All About Love' is no exception. The preface and first two chapters were promising. I especially liked the bits about abuse and love being unable to co-exist, as well as hooks' thoughts on how toxic masculinity influences relationships. The repeated claim that love is an action, not just a feeling, really resonated with me.

Burned out and feeling lost, Poppy is caught off guard when a friend asks her when she was last happy. The answer is two years earlier, on her last trip with Alex. She doesn’t know if they can recapture the magic of their friendship, but she’s willing to try. Can one more vacation fix what happened between them, or will her most important relationship remain fractured? I would still recommend this if you’re fine with many references because the story kept me interested and it was really nice seeing non binary & queer rep which we scarcely get. This book will challenge readers and make many of us uncomfortable. hooks interrogates normalized mediums of love in our society - romantic love, the nuclear family, etc. - and shows how these default systems can lead to problems. She touches on such an important and thought-provoking set of topics, including: how the media almost never portrays healthy, communicative relationships, how capitalism and patriarchy ruin love by forcing women to provide emotional labor while men do not, and how we take friendships for granted because of romance. Throughout all of this, she illuminates a path toward a more loving relationship with yourself and others, so we can all work toward a more loving society. A powerful quote about friendship: Roman's relationship with their mum and brother felt compelling and real, one of the highlights of the novel for me

Not to say this book doesn't. I can see why it would be a very beautiful reading experience to some people. It's just me. I've developed an aversion to anything optimistic and bright. The self-help tone and my-brother-in-Christ sort of religious anecdotes certainly didn't help either.I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the #VirtualPrideParade hosted by Tandem Collective UK .

This was a very enjoyable YA read with lots of pop culture references, about NB MC Roman sorting out their (love) life and growing up in the northern town of Tynemouth. All About Love: New Visions is a book by bell hooks published in 2000 that discusses aspects of romantic love in modern society. The book is organized into thirteen chapters, in which each chapter discusses an aspect of love. Within these chapters, Hooks also provides the reader with reflections on her own journey of love, as well as analysis of society's teachings of love. love is comprised of, but not equal to: commitment, affection, recognition, respect, trust, communication. Brilliant, intriguing and fast-paced … I loved Roman and Beau and I think their story is going to find a lot of hearts!’ L. D. Lapinski, author of Jamie It’s such an immersive story, with intrigue from start to finish. It’s a fun story all about fitting in and learning who’s best to let yourself bring your walls down. It’s about learning who you are and supporting those around you… it’s just, brilliant. I loved it!Honestly, the long and short of it is that this hit me in many ways. It helped me identify places to grow - in choosing honesty, in what I perceive as love or as loving.

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry : All About Romance People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry : All About Romance

dissimilation: taking on whatever appearance is needed to manipulate a situation. one of the barriers to truth-telling in love. cathexis: the process of investment in a person wherein the other becomes important to us. often confused for love; as in "I can't leave her. We've been through too much together." Roman Bright has always loved love stories. But being a non-binary teenager in a small northern town means their dating pool is limited and they haven’t had their own sweeping romance … yet. And that's the true basis of this book. There's this idea that any true love is a magical thing that comes along, and then our lives are perfect and no work is required. Many people are dissatisfied in perfectly good relationships because they realize they still have to work, and so it must not be true love, right? Wrong, and that's what hooks is trying to help readers understand. As part of the Virtual Pride Parade I got to annotate this book and had such a fun time during the whole event. I've now forwarded it on to the next reader in the parade and can't wait to hear how they enjoy it.If you want something light and easy to watch, this drama is for you. Especially if you've just gone through a particularly traumatic melodrama or just want a mood booster. A fun and heartwarming YA Rom-com (based on the author’s own teenage diaries) that follows the loveably sassy, Roman Bright a non-binary teen from Tynemouth who dreams of having their own movie worthy romance. All About Romance is a YA novel about a non-binary teenager in the North East looking for their big romance. Roman Bright lives in Tynemouth with their mum and brother, appearing confident and uncaring at their school and around their two best friends, but still unsure after they were messed around last summer by sporty JJ. When anonymous postcards signed by 'Big Red' appear in Roman's things and then Big Red seems to be painting murals around school, maybe something exciting is happening to Roman, but will they get too caught up in the excitement, even with new boy Beau to keep them grounded? I would say the first half or more really did work for me. hooks writes here about LOVE, the power of LOVE, the way LOVE is viewed in our western culture, the problems some people have with LOVE, etc. etc. She touched on topics that made sense to me. What especially worked for me was a section on Commitment that talked about the workplace, and since I work in a place that doesn't not necessarily foster a loving environment all the time, which I recognize more now that I've removed myself from some of the larger negativeness, I found what she had to say about love in the workplace especially profound. She recognizes that most people think a loving workplace is a thing of myths, but I do believe it can exist, but that so many people are wrapped up in gossip and not showing their true selves, so it's next to impossible for any love to grow out of that. I don't think she necessarily expects people to hold hands and sing Kumbayah all day long - she understands that with love comes work, hard work, it doesn't come easily. After a horrible incident that happened at the end of Year 10, Roman is hoping that Year 11 will be different, and it is. Just not the way they thought.
