Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn! Police Constable Peter Grant; an officer in the Metropolitan Police and the first official apprentice wizard in sixty years. False Value By Ben Aaronovitch". penguinrandomhouse.com. Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's new London start-up: the Serious Cybernetics Company. The book was released on 20 February 2020. [5] [6] Tales from the Folly [ edit ]Ximinez: So you think you are strong because you can survive the soft cushions. Well, we shall see. Biggles! Put her in the Comfy Chair! This novel, the ninth in the series, was released on 7 April 2022. [9] Peter Grant, now an expecting father, is tasked to investigate a suspicious magical death in London's silver vaults and uncover a centuries' old mystery. The secret to the Rivers series has always been the excellent balance between fantasy and police work thatAaronovitchcreates. I read a lot of crime fiction and the best are those that make the procedural nature of the job enjoyable to read. Aaronovitch manages to do this with magical procedure. DC Grant has always been a curious cop, by book nine he is also experienced. The basics have been covered and Grant is able to indulge in some fun experiments that help to solve the case.

Effortlessly original, endlessly inventive and hugely entertaining – step into the world of the much-loved, Number One bestselling Rivers of London series. The Goblin Market, which I love to bits, features in this book and we find out more about the who owns it and runs it. There are some cryptic remarks alluding to “the Starling” (Peter) and I can’t wait to find out more about what they mean. The door flies open and Cardinal Ximinez of Spain [Palin] enters, flanked by two junior cardinals. Cardinal Biggles [Jones] has goggles pushed over his forehead. Cardinal Fang [Gilliam] is just Cardinal Fang]Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London novels are set for TV adaptation". TheGuardian.com. 7 July 2022. Aaronovitch showcases a superlative blend of whimsy and grit in the eighth Rivers of London urban fantasy…. Jim Butcher meets Douglas Adams in this winning series installment.”— Publishers Weekly (starred) Speaking of side characters, I would have liked a bit more of Nightingale and his relationship with Peter, too (I really liked what I did see of it, though). Peter’s maturation arc means that he doesn’t need to depend on Nightingale as much as he used to, but Nightingale is a great character and I would love more of him. The title "Amongst our Weapons", and the chapter headings comprise a reference to the Monty Python sketch "The Spanish Inquisition". [3] The Rivers of London series continues to shine as one of the best and most impressive urban fantasy series with Amongst our Weapons.”—The Unseen Library

An autopsy reveals that whatever blasted the cavernous hole in David Moore’s chest also shot a metal cylinder into his body, and the cylinder had the magical signature known as vestigia, which is made up of faint sensory impressions. Clearly the murder was paranormal in some way, but the type of magic it involved is not one that Peter and Nightingale are familiar with.

Ximinez [with a cruel leer]: Now -- you will stay in the Comfy Chair until lunch time, with only a cup of coffee at eleven. [aside, to Biggles] Is that really all it is? There is a lot of police chief Alexander Seawoll in this book. The extent of his involvement is a bit improbable, given his leadership role, but he’s always had charisma as a character and I enjoyed him here. It was cool to learn a bit more about him and his family, too.

Winter's Gifts is a novella set after Lies Sleeping, [10] published in June 2023. It follows FBI Agent Kimberley Reynolds, introduced in Whispers Underground, who has subsequently become an ally of the Folly. Shortly after this, Althea’s ring is stolen in the night, an event she doesn’t notice until after the fact; it seems that she was put under a trance by the thief. David Moore’s apartment, Peter and Danni discover, was also broken into. Strange symbols were left on his wall, as was also the case in Althea’s apartment, and the child of one of his neighbors says she saw alien that day. Alongside their boss, DCI Thomas Nightingale, the SAU find themselves embroiled in a mystery that encompasses London's tangled history, foreign lands and, most terrifying of all, the North!
