I was looking forward to reading this, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It is a bittersweet read. There are captivating, intricate characters who feel totally real... but it is also full of grief and longing and heart-wrenching mistakes. It is beautifully written with lots of poignant lines that make you pause and think. However I feel guilty recommending this kind of book because it's not a happy, light-hearted read. It is raw, gritty and real. It's like a grey, rainy day, but when you're safe indoors. Stunning. I don't want to give too much away because everyone just needs to read it. The development of each character is fantastic and you know them and their personalities inside out. As a reader, you surrender yourself to this impeccably created narrative and give yourself to the feelings in a way that I have not felt in way too long. This isn’t your typical love story. It is gut wrenching, sad, painful and honest. However, in my opinion this is the truest depiction of love there is. She's grown up preparing for the end of days, in a tightly-controlled existence where Christmas, getting drunk and sex before marriage are all off-limits.From the character development, relationships, twists, the plot, this story just completely captivated me and I cannot stop thinking about it. My heart was already almost broken at the very beginning, before we'd even been introduced to any character properly, and that is how I knew that I was reading a special book. I honestly feel like my words won't do this novel justice.
