About this deal

Vitalstatistix is challenged to an (anachronistic) boxing match by another chief. When Getafix is injured by a stray menhir, Asterix takes on the role of Vitalstatistix’s trainer. The Muhammad Ali references went over my head as a kid, but watching an unhinged Getafix making potions was fun. Caesar calls the Egyptians inferior to the Romans. Outraged, Cleopatra wagers that her people can build a grand monument in record time. Edifis, a bumbling, timid architect is asked to perform the miracle, and asks his old friend Getafix for help. Meanwhile, his rival and Caesar's agents attempt to sabotage the effort. At the end of their career, legionaries are granted plots of land in Roman colonies for retirement. A perpetually inebriated soldier is given the Village, by Caesar's hand, which he promptly sells to an innkeeper for wine. The innkeeper sells his property and attempts to claim the village as his own. Upon discovering his ownership is void, he is pushed by his dominant wife to campaign to be elected chief, causing rivalries throughout the village. To complicate matter, the soldier arrives and asks the local legions' aid in reclaiming his village, since he didn't get enough wine for it. Julius Caesar causes chaos in the Gaulish village when he gifts it to a drunken officer as a prank. The political campaigning is fun, especially Geriatrix’s futile attempt at forming his own political party.

Asterix and Obelix All at Sea is a fast-paced adventure that represents Asterix at its least coherent. There’s little explanation for Obelix’s various states of metamorphosis, and it seems likely that Uderzo was making it up as he went along. It’ll probably work for kids, but requires too much suspension of disbelief for adult readers to truly enjoy. https://www.gamesradar.com/fcbd-2020-x-men-1-leads-free-comic-book-summer-week-1-titles/ Retrieved 2020- 08-29 Comment Obelix est tombé dans la marmite du druide quand il était petit ( How Obelix Fell into the Magic Potion When he was a Little Boy) Rival aliens visit the Gaulish village in search of the Gaul's great weapon, which is "known throughout the universe". The aliens battle each other, and the magic potion later proves to have an unexpected side-effect on them.

The Romans conspire with a Roman-friendly Gaulish village to declare a ritual winner-takes-all fight between village chiefs. A blow from one of Obelix's menhirs causes Getafix to lose his memory, leaving the Gauls without magic potion. The fight parodies professional boxing.

Asterix, Obelix, and Getafix travel to the eastern reaches of the known world, Sarmatia. The book breaks the formula by starting the Gauls’ story when they’re already close to their destination, allowing for more interesting story-telling. The most viable love interest yet for the main characters is handled surprisingly well. Also in 1989–90 the first eight illustrated stories were reprinted in some locales as four books, each containing two of the original stories. Several of the most interesting Asterix plots involve the Gauls temporarily teaming up with the Romans. Quaestor Vexatius Sinusitus is held hostage in the village while Asterix and Obelix seek out a potion ingredient in Switzerland. Reading as a kid, this book left me confused about what an orgy was – for a long time I assumed it involved a lot of cheese. The scenes in the bank vault and Obelix’s insistence that Switzerland is flat are both great moments.

The Gaulish village is troubled by a marauding shipload of Vikings – Asterix and the Vikings would have been a better title. It’s creepy for a children’s book, with the mugs made from the skulls of the conquerors’ enemies. The ending, where the Vikings’ quest was only too successful, is satisfying. Escorted by two Arvernes chiefs, a mysterious teenager has just arrived at the village. Caesar and his legionaries seek her, and for good reason. In the village, it is rumored that the father of the visitor is no other than the great Vercingétorix himself. books from Asterix and the Great Divide (1980) to Asterix and the Falling Sky (2005) written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo The Romans discover the secret of the Gauls' strength is the magic potion brewed by the druid Getafix, so they capture him and attempt to get the recipe out of him. It is up to Asterix and his wits to save Getafix. Centering Ferri and Conrad’s fourth adventure on a strong, yet unpredictable, female character is a good move. As a music blogger, I appreciate the updated popular cultural references, shifting from a disdain of popular music in the Goscinny adventures to quoting Culture Club’s ‘Karma Chameleon’Asterix and Obelix need to return a hostage to a lone village in Spain that still holds out against the Roman invaders. Pepe is one of the series’ most memorable characters, with his habit of holding his breath. Obelix takes up Spanish dancing (“¡Olé!”) and Asterix takes up bull-fighting. Goscinny and Uderzo’s Britain is full of warm beer and tea. The reference to French language instruction (“It is smaller than the garden of my uncle, but larger than the pen of my aunt”) is subtly hilarious, and Obelix would certainly make a great rugby prop. Missing Scroll was inspired by WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange. It’s amusingly meta, as Caesar tries to erase the indomitable Gaulish village from written history, only to be challenged by the Assange-like Confoundtheirpolitix. In November 2019 it was announced that the american publisher Papercutz would take over the american licence for the comic title Asterix and begin to reprint all of its stories in an Omnibus series begining in 2020. Future volumes was said to be planned to get released at a pace of four volumes per year. [1] The series was initially planned to launch with its first two volumes concurrent on May 19, 2020. [2] However due to the 2020 pandemic their release date was pushed forward til July the same year. [3] The first volume Asterix Omnibus Vol. 1 was finally launched to the US market on July 14, 2020 with a print run of 20,000 hardcover copies plus an additional 50,000 softcover copies. [4] Format Julius Caesar dispatches a contentious individual named Tortuous Convolvulus to spread discord in the Gaulish village. Convolvulus is a fascinating adversary, smoothly creating enmity wherever he goes (represented by green speech bubbles). Vitalstatistix’s wife Impedimenta is great here, pointing out that if the village is chronicled, “they won’t be calling it the Adventures of Vitalstatistix the Gaul”.To prove to his critics that the Gauls are mere mortals, Julius Caesar challenges the village to perform twelve tasks that only gods could perform, similar to the twelve tasks of Hercules. If they succeed, he will admit defeat and let them become the rulers of Rome, but if they fail, they will become his slaves. The challenge is accepted and Asterix and Obelix are chosen to represent the village, eventually succeeding in all tasks. (This comic book, published in 1976, is an adaptation of the animated film The Twelve Tasks of Asterix. The artwork is thought to be by Uderzo's brother Marcel. It has rarely been printed and usually excluded from the canonical list of Asterix volumes.) In which Asterix, Obelix, and Cacofonix travel to India on a magic carpet. It was fast-moving enough to entertain me as a kid, but in hindsight it marks the start of an era where Uderzo is out of new ideas for stories and relies on novelty to drive the series.
