D'Offizi, Sergio (interviewee) (2003). In the Jungle: The Making of Cannibal Holocaust (Documentary). Italy: Alan Young Pictures. A scene so horrific it has to be seen to be believed. The turtle scene in Cannibal Holocaust will linger in your mind long after it is over. Banned in fifty countries, and name one of the most controversial movie of all time by EW, Ruggero Deadato’s Cannibal Holocaust is truly an exercise in depravity.

Snyder, Jon (28 October 2010). "25 Best Horror Films of All Time". Wired . Retrieved 10 November 2010. We hear at the beginning how four young film-makers travelled deep into the jungle, only to never be heard from again. A professor, curious as to their fate, retraces their path and finds their footage. What you have here is two stories in one. You have the more 'traditional' Hollywood story-telling of the professor talking to TV executives about showing the found footage on network television and the footage which was retrieved from the jungles (first person, ala Blair Witch). Many of the censorship issues with Cannibal Holocaust concern the on-screen killings of animals. Deodato himself has condemned his past actions, [2] saying: "I was stupid to introduce animals." [45] Although six animal deaths appear onscreen, seven animals were killed for the production, as the scene depicting the monkey's death was shot twice, resulting in the death of two monkeys. Both of the animals were eaten by indigenous cast members, who consider monkey brains a delicacy. [12] The animals that were killed onscreen were:

Henderson, Eric. "Film Review:Cannibal Holocaust". Slant Magazine. Archived from the original on 30 September 2007 . Retrieved 15 February 2007. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST is the farthest edge of Extreme Cinema--as in Extreme Sports. It feels stuntlike, yet the combination of amplified bloodlust and world-weary regret is unique. Like Lucio Fulci's even more personal CAT IN THE BRAIN, it's an affecting enactment of an exploitation artist's conscience tearing apart.

Let me make a confession. Despite being a serious horror fan and having met Ruggero Deodato twice, engaging in some interesting conversation with him, I had never seen "Cannibal Holocaust" before. I had a fairly good idea of what to expect from it, as I was familiar with Umberto Lenzi's "Cannibal Ferox", which I suspected was quite similar (something I suspected correctly). But I think it's safe to say Deodato went further than Lenzi's imitation did. Cannibal Holocaust". Film and Video Labelling Body of NZ. Archived from the original on 4 March 2016 . Retrieved 12 January 2014. It can be argued that humans coming into the homo-sapiens stage of evolution survived and expanded because of what is now considered barbarous savage ways. Savagery was a survival tool. We came from barbarity...and to an extent we still are savages.Since its original release, Cannibal Holocaust has been the target of censorship by moral and animal activists. Other than graphic gore, the film contains several scenes of sexual violence and genuine cruelty to animals, issues which find Cannibal Holocaust in the midst of controversy to this day. Due to this notoriety, Cannibal Holocaust has been marketed as having been banned in over 50 countries. [35] In 2006, Entertainment Weekly magazine named Cannibal Holocaust as the 20th most controversial film of all time. [36] Snuff film allegations [ edit ] The film's impalement scene was one of several scenes examined by the courts to determine whether the violence depicted was staged or genuine. Sometimes I watch movies and simply think, what is wrong with people? How can these images possibly exist on film? Who thought of this, and what type of actor would agree to do this?Critics remain split on their stances of Cannibal Holocaust. Supporters of the film cite it as a serious and well-made social commentary on the modern world. Sean Axmaker praised the structure and setup of the film, saying: "It's a weird movie with an awkward narrative, which Deodato makes all the more effective with his grimy sheen of documentary realism, while Riz Ortolani's unsettlingly lovely, elegiac score provides a weird undercurrent." [23] Jason Buchanan of AllMovie said: "While it's hard to defend the director for some of the truly repugnant images with which he has chosen to convey his message, there is indeed an underlying point to the film, if one is able to look beyond the sometimes unwatchable images that assault the viewer." [24] Primitive savagery meets the brutality of the modern world in Ruggero Deodato’s timeless slice of visceral horror – Cannibal Holocaust, a film so violent and depraved that the director was charged with killing his own cast! I am guessing we are meant to be impressed by the feeding scenes, since logic would lead you to believe that that is what a cannibal film centers on. If so, maybe that explains why all the natives must smear their food all over their faces before they eat it, although I am at a loss to explain why women are regularly mutilated, dismembered, fornicated with and THEN eaten. In amongst the film there is the media business cogs turning. The dilemma of TV executives battling with the Professor to air the once lost footage on TV for the viewing public. The professor is reluctant. Salo, another film that is banned and always creates controversy when brought up, is a whole new exercise in dehumanization. The sex, torture and the violence is so depraved and dehumanizing it is almost impossible to think that anyone could have filmed this. The film is still forbidden in a large number of countries and it’s very hard to find a copy of it to watch.
